Speed Demon — Forming New Playing Patterns and Unlocking Intervallic Logic

For years, contemporary instrumentalists have been trapped by visual geometry. Fingers default to the same predictable scale boxes, familiar arpeggio grips, and step-wise linear runs that look neat on the instrument but sound completely uninspired to the listener. Speed Demon changes that by introducing a rigorous, non-linear mathematical permutation system heavily inspired by the legendary jazz educator Charlie Banacos.

By anchoring an unwavering pivot root note (“1”) and relentlessly scrambling the surrounding scale degrees through wide, angular jumps and directional waves, the visual illusions of your instrument dissolve. This course systematically uncovers your technical blind spots and replaces them with an iron-clad, physical map under your fingers.

Seven Levels of Advanced Harmonic and Structural Density

This course spans seven distinct structural layers, systematically pushing your technique through increasing levels of complexity:

  • Level 1: Diatonic Major Core. Grounds your technique inside the universal major scale template, establishing the initial physical grid.
  • Level 2: Melodic Minor Shift. Lowers the 3rd scale step to compress your layout and expand modern jazz options over altered dominants.
  • Level 3: Augmented Second Stretch. Navigates the wide, irregular three-semitone gap of the Harmonic Minor scale at blistering tempos.
  • Level 4: Hybrid Dark Layer. Blends a bright major triad with a dark minor sixth, challenging your muscle-memory adaptability.
  • Level 5: Octatonic Interlock. Symmetrical eight-tone diminished layout that completely shifts traditional numbered scale-degree index assumptions.
  • Level 6: Floating Grid. Symmetrical six-tone Whole Tone profiles that eliminate perfect fourths and fifths, creating smooth, anchorless terrain.
  • Level 7: Blues Grid – Another six note scale with incredible potential because it is based by key not by chord.

The Banacos Legacy: Built-In 3-Note Pickups

True to the pedagogical philosophy of Charlie Banacos, these exercises are built for metric flexibility and real-world improvisation. Every key signature utilizes an intentional 3-note pickup structure (consisting of an eighth-note rest followed by the last three notes of the pattern) leading directly into the core pattern. This layout forces you to navigate off-beat phrasing, maintain rock-solid rhythm, and accent smoothly across the bar line at high velocities.

How to Use This Course

The practice routine demands absolute cognitive engagement. Dedicate 15 minutes, twice a day, to these exercises. This tightly focused 30 minutes is enough to make profound progress without physical burnout. Work through every pattern across all 12 keys following the strict Circle of 5ths order, training your ears to achieve perfect key retention against the unwavering root anchor.

Example of a Blues Scale in Bb

This example uses a Bb Blues scale and repeats the 2nd measure four times. There are midifiles included that play the 2nd measure 2X or just the single 2 measure one time. This gives you a lot of flexibility. Because you can use a DAW such as Garage Band you can change the type of instrument playing the midi file and also the feel. i.e. making it a swing or straight eighth rhythm.

Keep in mind this is one page of 6 because the sequence is started on all notes of the scale. This gives you a massive amount of examples to get your blues chops screaming fast! If your reading skills are not great memorize the pattern A-M. Start slow, there are midi files so you can control the tempo at all times.

Curated PDF Workbooks & Companion MIDI Files Included

Every single level section features autonomous code infrastructure output assets:

  • Pristine Portrait PDFs: Tightly formatted vertical workbook sheets presenting exactly four measures of 2/4 per line (two keys side-by-side) with a professional “4x” or “2x” loop bracket around the core pattern.
  • Native Unfolded MIDI Files: Standard MIDI files (`.mid`) that programmatically unfold the repeat loops, yielding an exact 4x or 2x tracking sequence for every single key center.
  • Centered Publishing Footers: Every printable page includes centered publishing notation metadata matching standard library editions.

Table of Contents:

Frequently Asked Questions

I picked up your speed demon course. I am wondering about daily practice routine. I would think to be systematic and cover the entire instrument for phase 1:

  • 1. play through the exercise at a slow tempo with a drone and play along with the midi file. start with ionian. work out the fingerings and picking. Find gaps and problems and fix those in isolation.
  • 2. cycle through the 7 3NPS positions
  • 3. cycle through the 7 modes of the current key
  • 4. cycle keys

Do I have this correct?

Yes that seems like a good approach. I didn’t mention in the book that articulation can also be applied. Like hammer ons, pulloffs or slides on a guitar or tonguing on a wind instrument etc. That said, many people that play fast have very little articulation unless it allows them to play the line faster. Blues guitarists commonly have hammer ons, pulloffs or slides to make a line easier to play.

So take that into consideration but overall start slow figure out how you want to play the line then start speeding it up. One thing you will probably find is as you speed up some of the ways you play something might not work so you will have to adjust along the way

Your productivity always amazes me! Do you think that this course would work well for bass too?

Yes I think it is important for bass players to read treble clef because if you are asked to play the melody to a piece of music it is often given to you in treble clef. I was thinking about making a bass clef version but just short on time right now. If you get the treble clef version I’ll send you the bass clef for free once I make it and of course that is “IF” I make it. Can’t promise right now :)

Why does this course engrave a repeat sign starting at the second bar instead of the first?

This mirrors Charlie Banacos’ exact layout rules. The first measure functions as a 3-note pickup to establish the tempo and physical trajectory off the downbeat. The second measure contains the core four-note speed demon pattern, which repeats exactly 4 times before the double-sided repeat signs move your hands to the next key signature along the wheel.

I don’t know if I have two 15 minutes slots everyday to practice Speed Demon. Do you have any recommendations for someone in my situation?

One of the best things you can do is mental practice. Charlie Banacos always told me to do as much mental practice as I can. You don’t need your instrument you just need to imagine the instrument in your mind and in this case practice the melodies. You are basically playing your instrument in your mind so here are some specifics:

  • 1. Figure out the fingerings for the melody and as you practice move your fingers in the exact order. If you play an string instrument also figure out the picking, bowing etc… So you need to sync up both hands in your mind.
  • 2.You will get the most out of this type of practice if you can actually hear the melody in your head. This obviously requires ear training ability so you need to develop not only your ability to hear the melody but be able to prove it by singing the melody.
  • 3. 15 minutes of mental practicing will totally tire you out so I’d start with 5 minutes and work up from there.
  • 4. Mental practicing as you go to bed is probably the best way to fall asleep. I do it every night and I’m luckly to get 10 or 15 minutes in before I’m sound asleep.
  • 5. Understanding “Long Line Rhythm” is an important concept when working on your ability to play fast. In the macro sense as an analogy if you now where you are going you will get there quicker. When we apply that to music have a beginning point and an end point in mind helps your mind to not concentrate on every note but on where it is starting and ending.
  • 6. The Physiological aspect of your interface with your instrument is crucial to gaining speed and accuracy. If you are a guitar player I lay out a whole course of study in the “Guitar Physiology and Technique” but for any instrument the overall playing method is the same. Ergonomic movement, no tension anywhere in your body, correct posture and keeping your fingers close to the frets, pads or keyboard. Also the concept that bigger muscles move smaller muscles. If you find that your hand or wrist hurt try incorporating your forearm into your movements. Easier said than done but it can make the difference between quitting music and continuing to play.

So use these directions and you will have amazing progress. But remember, like anything you practice, it takes time to get good at it. But you should find within a week or so you will see progress. I often give this idea to my students where I’d give them a hard melody and have them go home for a week and practice it, but only in their head. Then when they came for their next lesson I’d had them play it for the first time on their instrument. Many reported that they could play the melody faster than anything they had ever played and they could recall it weeks later so it was deeply embedded. Mental practicing is powerful stuff and all the great musicians I know do it everyday!!

I’m a beginner. Can I dive straight into Level 5 Symmetrical Diminished or Level 6 Whole Tone?

It is highly recommended that you master the levels in sequential order. Symmetrical layouts completely alter your finger placement choices because they break away from traditional seven-note major scale spacing. Level 1 Major and Level 2 Melodic Minor build the foundational muscle memory and relative pitch strength required to navigate those advanced grids safely. That said, if you are a more advanced player or let’s say just a blues player and that is all you want to play then by all means jump right to what interests you the most or fits into your style.

Why are there no audio mp3 play-alongs included in this version of the book?

By providing high-fidelity, unfolded Type-1 standard MIDI files instead of static audio tracks, you gain total freedom. You can import these custom MIDI patterns directly into any DAW or software sampler (like Kontakt) to instantly pick your own favorite instrument sounds, apply custom swing adjustments, and scale the playback speed to any tempo that fits your immediate practice needs. I should also mention there are a ton of midi to mp3 conversion programs out there so if you prefer an mp3 then they are pretty easy to make. Just remember it will be at one tempo only so you would have to make multiple mp3s to slowly speed up the lines.

Does this book include guitar tablature staves underneath the standard music notation?

No. This course is strictly note and interval-agnostic, using clean treble-clef notation to ensure it functions perfectly for guitarists, pianists, saxophonists, and violinists alike. Removing specific instrument finger-shapes forces you to learn the actual layout of the pitches across your entire instrument, effectively shattering your reliance on visual geometric box patterns. That said, I certainly can understand if you seldom have to sight read on the guitar you will have difficulty getting started with this course. I would still recommend you get the course and take time to figure out and memorize each melody. They are short so it should take too long to get it into your memory. Then start using the 4x midi files and build from there. It will work it just takes a little extra time for you to memorize each melodic line

VCVRack and MIRack

Many of the topics listed above have audio examples that can be played using two FREE programs that you need to download separately and install on your computer (Mac or Windows) or smart device i.e. iphone/ipad. VCVRack and MIRack are the two programs to use. I’ve included multiple examples of many of the effects listed above so that you can not only hear audio examples but use them in composing, recording or live performance.

VCVRack works with both Mac and Windows and MIRack works with Iphone and Ipad only. Again, I’ve include many “patches” for these two programs that demonstrate the sound of various equipment as well as other patches. Some of the possible uses of these two programs are:

  • Hearing the sounds generated by various equipment effects and synthesizer gear.
  • Using MIDI Controllers to play various sounds for your audio productions both in the studio and live performance.
  • Using your instrument to play sounds found in VCVRack or MIRack via a Digital Audio Interface (you need to buy a Digital Audio Interface in order to do this! But there are many cheap ones nowadays.).
  • Use VCVRack as a stereo recorder or even multi-track recording. Again requires a Digital Audio Interface.
  • Create graphic videos of your audio input to post on youtube or use at your live gigs.
  • Many patches in VCVRack and MIRack include a keyboard so you can play sounds directly.

Additional Resources

I’ve also included in this downloadable package various help files to further educate you on electronic music or provide you with quick access to additional resources. These include:

What people are saying:

I used an earlier edition of this book back when Bruce taught the “Effects Applications in Live Performance Class” at Berklee College of Music.” A really valuable resource for quick basic knowledge on how to use various effects units and understanding the overall picture of the resources that a contemporary musician needs to know to function in contemporary music. J. Ogland

I used this book in the “Electronic Music Ensemble” that professor Arnold used at Montclair State University. I was very “green” on understanding even the fundamentals of electronic music and this book really helped me to get the big picture. It also turned me on the VCVRack and MIRack which has saved me thousands of dollars. I can now create professional sounding recordings with state of the art sounds. Awesome!!. J. Deiter

In my opinion this is a must own book for any contemporary musician. You will be called on to used much of the equipment found in this book and you need basic knowledge on what it does and how to operate it. It will also help you immensely if you are in a studio situation where you are not happy with your sound and through the knowledge contained in this book you can have an intelligent conversation with the engineer on how you might fix your sound. Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series by Bruce Arnold

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series is a series of books on Pitch Class Set Improvisation more specifically they look at 44 different two triad pairs or two trichord pairs that are great to play as a scale or create other patterns for improvisation.

These Pitch Class Set Improvisation books include treble and bass clef exercises and can be purchased as individual books or as a bundle. These books are great for learning advanced improvisational ideas but they are also excellent for ear training and sight singing to improve your key retention. You do not need to start from the beginning of this series to use it.

Each book looks at an interesting two triad pair or two trichord pair that I have used in my compositions and improvisation. You can hear some of the application of these combinations by exploring the Recordings Section of this website. You can find a detailed list of the three note pairs that I’ve used by checking out the Bruce Arnold Composition Compilation. By following the links below to each book you can hear and see examples from each course.  Click on book cover to hear examples or follow the highlighted links for each volume.

Each two triad pair course also includes 12 MetroDrone® MP3s so that you can hear each exercise in the correct key center. There are also multiple exercises that apply the three note pairs to technical and musical situations. Each course has a PDF that gives you background on each combination and shows you how to apply these ideas to various chord types in all keys.

Every combination has its strong points and through the years of using these combinations you find out crucial information that will save you years of research. This series is unique and comprehensive, there is no other series like this currently available.

Many students don’t realize the importance of sight singing the exercises found in the books below. First, these wouldn’t be the first books I would recommend for sight singing because they are incredible difficult but will greatly increase your key retention ability because of the nature of these two triad pairs or two trichord pairs.

All books in this series can be used to tackle specific problems that occur in the development of your ear training ability. Here is an example: Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19B covers two major triads a whole step apart.

Because they are major triads it is often hard for a student to hear these two triads in the over key center. They usually have the problem that they want to hear one or both of the triads in their own key centers. By singing through the exercises presented in the over key center you develop the ability to stay in a key center when you are hearing two major triads built on any degree.

Below is a list of the books in the Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series. Only those that are completed have links

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series: A Closer Look

The numbers listed after each title refer to the pitch class set used to form the 2 three note pairs. A number like 037 refers to the intervals found in each 3 note group. These three note combinations are two triad pairs but each three note group is also referred to as a trichord. The two triad pairs in the 037-037 series concentrate on traditional major and minor triads and is an excellent place to start with this series.

You will hear the 037-037 combinations used extensively in all styles of music and can really interject new life into your improvisations. Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V21A Two Triad Pair is also highly recommended because it looks at a new way of combining a Blues Scale into two trichords. That said, all combinations will give you very intriguing and give you one aspect of Pitch Class Set Improvisation and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Each book in the Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series contains over 300 pages of exercises along with extensive information on how each combination works with all chords in all keys as well as lists showing which scales contains the 2 three note pair combinations. A three page section on how to apply these trichord pairs to various practice regimens is also included. If you click on the book cover image for any book or follow the links you will be able to hear and see examples for each course.

A special note for ear training students. All the trichord combinations found in this series are excellent for sight singing and will seriously improve your key retention which is crucial to mastering Two Note Ear Training and ultimately Hearing Chord Progressions.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V1 by Bruce Arnold for Muse Eek Publishing Inc.-Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V1 Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V1 Two Triad Pair looks at the two 013 combination. Extremely useful combination because it is also part of a symmetrical diminished scale. I written over 50 compositions with this combination. You can hear some examples of it’s use in a jazz style on the CD Art of the Blues. This combination is also good for other styles too. Check out the composition Multiplicity from the Heavy Mental CD for an example of a rock/heavy metal application.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series do quite a few things for your musicianship:

  • Explore a new sound to breath some new ideas into your improvisation
  • The course gives you exercises to get this idea under your fingers and into your head
  • It is a rich resource for developing your key retention which is crucial to good ear training skills
  • Give you insight via music theory analysis of new ways to improvise

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V2 Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V2 Two Triad Pair is a great one for finding new ways to use elements from a Symmetrical Diminished scale. Symmetrical Diminished is one of the most used scales and is found in everything from Heavy Metal to Blues to Jazz. If you are a blues person and dig Robben Ford’s playing then this is one of the key elements to getting that sound. Do you like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai? They use this scale too often to count.

Of course all the great jazz players have an abundance of the Symmetrical Diminished in their improvisations. Volume Two of the Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence gives you some cool ways to use this scale by disguising it within a six note grouping divided into two 3 note parts. This is an easy one to start applying right away!

This book concentrates on:

  • The 2nd important 013 combination that is so useful in improvisation
  • Developing the technical skills needed to apply this awesome sound to your own music
  • Understanding all the possible applications of this sound to various chord types.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V3 Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V3 Two Triad Pair covers the pitch class set 014 and is great if you are a Thelonious Monk fan. 014 is a great choice for a dominant chord which I personally use quite often. The two 014 groupings in this course are great substitutions for the kind of V7 to I7 context you would find in a blues progression. Very Monk! You can hear a composition that uses this combination by listening to “Numbers” from my CD “A Few Dozen.”

This book concentrates on:

  • Learning melodic phrases through targeted exercises.
  • Understanding how this 014 combination can be used in music.
  • Targeted “Atomic Scale” exercise that helps you learn this new sound quickly.

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V5 Two Triad Pair examines the application of an 015 pitch class set in various melodic situations. It explores the only 015 combination that can be used over a major and minor chord so these melodies are super useful when improvising over those two chord structures. The course also gives you a list of the other 015 combinations in case you want to dig deeper into this sound. You can hear four compositions that use the 015 pitch class set by listening to the four “Variations” from the CD “Blue Eleven.”

-Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V6 Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V6 Two Triad Pair enters the part of this book series where all volumes henceforth will be easy to apply to common harmonic and melodic situations. This is the part of the series that I’m most excited about because the melodic lines sound very modern but also fit perfectly as a replacement for common chords and melodies you use everyday. This course concentrates on the 015-027 which is a pleasing sound that works over major and minor chords.

I often use this sound both melodically and harmonically to replace the chords and scales associated with the major modes. It also works very well in any idiom by creating a memorable sound that is sweet yet complex enough to give you a distinctive palette. You can hear an example of soloing with 015-027 in the middle of “Hobroken” from the CD “Blue Eleven.”

This book concentrates on:

  • Applying this classic combination to various exercises
  • Charts to show you all the applications of this sound to various chords in all keys
  • Targeted information for practicing this very useful combination.
  • Études with rhythmic complexity to help you apply this combination.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V7 Two Triad Pair concentrates on two 016s. This is an incredible useful and cool sounding combination. Directly applicable to many chord types such as minor, dominant and diminished but more important can be used in a blues and sounds awesome.

016 is one of the most important pitch class sets because it contains a tritone. This means it will be an excellent replacement for a dominant chord. This is a very easy combination to hear and you should be using it in no time. As I mentioned all the upcoming books in this series will all be very useful and a quick study to implement in your playing.

This book concentrates on:

Directly applicable to many chord types such as dominant and diminished. It can also be used anywhere that you use a symmetrical diminished scale. 016 is a very versatile pitch class sets because of it’s many applications to various chord types. One 016 is commonly used as a replacement for a dominant chord but can also be used on a minor and diminished to name a few. This is a very easy combination to hear and you should be using it in no time. A very useful and a quick study to implement an 016 in your playing.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9 Trichord Pair -by-bruce-arnold-for-muse-eek-publishing-inc-Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9 Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9 Two Triad Pair concentrates on another two 024s. This is a combination that I’ve used often and you can hear some examples of this in the compositions “Ingenue” and the video “024 Alap.” A hauntly beautiful sound that works well in any idiom. It is also easy to hear and implement so I highly recommend this as a must own volume. It is also a good place to start if you just want to develop some melodic and harmonic ideas with a very useful and beautiful sound.

This book concentrates on:

  • Targeted exercises to get the 024s under your fingers.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9 Two Triad Pair

Harmonic-and-Melodic-Equivalence-V9B-by-bruce-arnold-for-muse-eek-publishing-inc--Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9B Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9B Two Triad Pair Two Triad Pair uses two 024 pitch class sets a half step apart. C, D, E and Db, Eb, F would be an example of this pair.

With 9 and 9B I’ve included a section of diad pairs which is something that I use often. Diad pairs are interesting in that they can also form two notes of chords and thus can be harmonic reharmonizations expressed in a melody. This is something that advanced improvisers use often.

McCoy Tyner was one of the first to use this and it’s a great technique. I recommend putting on a simple one chord vamp or I VI II V and then playing through some of the diad exercises in the book. They sound great and will expand you concept of playing harmonically generated lines over simple chord progressions. In this case you are not using simple triads to outline the harmony but a pair of 024s.

This book concentrates on:

  • The common exercises found in these courses but addition diad pair exercises.
  • Charts that show you the use the two 024s to make extended chord progressions.
  • Detailed information on how to apply these two 024s.
  • Three pages of exercise tips on how to organize your practice using 024s.

Harmonic-and-Melodic-Equivalence-V9C-by-bruce-arnold-for-muse-eek-publishing-inc-Harmonic-and-Melodic-Equivalence-Series

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9C Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9C Two Triad Pair works with a trichord pair consisting of a two 024 pitch class sets a minor 3rd apart. Two trichords which unlike a two triad pair are not build in thirds. The Two 024 trichords pair used in this book are unusual for this series in that they don’t work over any traditional chord. They do work as a chordal superimposition and you will find this to be a common sound that advanced improvisors use in their playing.

This book teaches you how to pivot back and forth between these two trichords in various ways. You will get 328 pages of exercises in all keys with MP3 and Midi files that show you various ways to accomplish this task. Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9C Trichord Pair also contains examples of how you could use these two trichords in extended harmonic reharmonizations. These aspects make this the definitive study of this two trichord pair

This book concentrates on:

  • The common exercises that lay a foundation for this type of improvisation.
  • Charts of different possible extended chord progressions that can be formed from these two trichords.
  • A complete study of the possible ways to apply these two 024s.
  • Multiple pages of exercise tips on how to organize your practice using 024s.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9D Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9D Two Triad Pair uses a trichord pair consisting of a two 024 pitch class sets an augmented 4th apart. This is one of the rare occasions where the combination of two three note pairs is a common scale. In this case it is a whole tone scale. The exercises presented in this volume are a case in point to show how cycling back and forth between two three note groups can breath new life into a super common scale.

This book teaches you how to pivot back and forth between these two 024s in various ways. You will get 328 pages of exercises in all keys with MP3 and Midi files that show you various ways to accomplish this task. Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V9D Trichord Pair also gives you a lot of information on how to take a scale like whole tone or diminished and make it less obvious that you are playing a common scale. This advanced improvisational advise is priceless and hard to find but is contained in this book!

This book concentrates on:

  • Exercises that breath new life into a whole tone scale.
  • Vital information for making common scales more interesting.
  • Exercises and Études to help you master not only the two 024s but a whole tone scale.
  • Multiple pages of exercise tips on how to organize your practice using 024s.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V10A Two Triad Pair

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V10A Two Triad Pair consists of a two 025 trichord pair. This will be one of your most useful combinations of a two three note pair because it contains six notes of a major scale. 025s create a beautiful sound which is similar to a pentatonic scale. You can hear examples of using it as a composition and improvisation device on the “Lavadura” recording. It is a gorgeous sound that works extremely well as a replacement for a major or pentatonic scale and sounds great as a replacement for a major or minor chord. A must own course in my opinion!

This book teaches you how to pivot back and forth between these two 025s in various ways. You will get 328 pages of exercises in all keys with MP3 and Midi files that show you various ways to accomplish this task. Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V10A Trichord Pair also gives you information on how to superimpose this sound to create chord progressions.

This book concentrates on:

  • Exercises that help you develop dexterity with this two three note pair.
  • Information on the possible combinations of the 025 pitch class set.

These six notes are also part of a diminished scale so they can be used anywhere that you might apply a diminished or symmetrical diminished scale. This makes them extremely useful for an improvising musician.

This is one of the must own courses from this series. The number of times an improvising musician uses any of the three diminished scales is high. This course gives you a new way to organize six notes from these diminished scales and that is a hard to find situation so take advantage of this cool combination

This book concentrates on:

  • Three note pair exercises and études to help you master this combination.
  • Background on 025s and how they can help you find new sounds to use in your improvisation and composition.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V14A Two Triad Pair

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V14A Two Triad Pair is the first in a series of books looking at the 026-016 trichord pair. In many ways the 026 and 016 are your go to trichords because they contain a tritone which makes them great substitutes for a dominant chord. But the 026-016 trichord pairs have many other tricks up their sleeves.

This series is important to understanding how the 026 and 016 fit into the bigger picture. As with all the Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence books you are exploring the three and six note structures that can be used in the place of your typical triads or the 22 most used scales in music. Along the way I’m providing you with a host of other information that helps you understand not only the structures in these books, but how they fit into the bigger picture of music as a whole.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Volume 14A is also important because it discusses the eight books in this series. That allows you to see every way an 026-016 trichord pair can be built and why each one is important. C, Db, G and Eb, F, A would be an example of this scale which works over all the chords that are associated with the melodic minor ascending scale.

This book concentrates on:

  • An overview of all eight 026-016 pitch class sets
  • Exercises to help you gain technical facility with these trichords.
  • Lists showing you everywhere you can apply this two pair combination in all keys.
  • Technical and ear training exercises to raise your ability.
  • Harmonic reharmonizations using the two trichords or the entire hexatonic scale

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V15 Two Triad Pair

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V15 Two Triad Pair covers one of the most important combinations of the whole series. This volume uses two 027s which creates a wonderful sound reminiscent of melodies built in 4ths but with so much more to offer as you dig deeper. C, D, G and E, A, B are the two trichords which is like a major scale without the 4th but divided up into two 3 note groups.

This is an incredible combination that works great for replacing a major or minor chord as a melody or a chord. You can hear a composition based on two 027s as well as improvisation using the same idea on the tune “Snap, Crackle, Bop from the CD “Blue Lotus.”

This book concentrates on:

  • The myriad of applications of this important pitch class set combination.
  • Exercises to help you gain technical facility with these trichords.
  • Lists showing you everywhere you can apply this two pair combination in all keys.
  • Technical and ear training exercises to raise your ability.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19A Two Triad Pair

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19A Two Triad Pair Two Triad Pair is also a great way to work on Major and Minor triads. I’m often asked how to work on triads, and while there are many ways to master these important sounds, the idea of pivoting back and forth between the triads gives you a quick way to use the triads that sounds great!

And that’s why I’m releasing Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19A Two Triad Pair today! Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19A

Two Triad Pair

covers the highly accessible Major and Minor triad a whole step apart. This is a sound that is used by many artists usually in conjunction with a Major Pentatonic scale. Joe Zawinal of “Weather Report” is the 1st person that comes to mind; he uses a lot of Major Pentatonic in his soloing and adds in this “two triad” idea to give more interest. So you too can add this interesting sound into your playing by working on a few of the exercises.

By the way this volume can be very good for ear training. You will find that singing these two triads in various keys can be very challenging for your key retention. If you are having trouble with key retention, which most students do, this is a great book to have to fix that condition.

This book concentrates on:

  • Mastering your triadic ability
  • Understanding and applying the often used improvisation concept.
  • Exercises to built up technical skills with triads.
  • Tips to apply this combination in many ways.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19B Two Triad Pair

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19B Two Triad Pair contains the use of two major triads a whole step apart. The implementation of this in jazz started with McCoy Tyner’s “Passion Dance” recording. It was picked up soon after by Charlie Banacos with his now famous “Double Mambos” exercise also known as “Bitonal Pendulums.”

The two triads a whole step apart literally changed my musical life. Once I heard McCoy Tyner improvise with this concept I was totally captivated. Nowadays it is one of the signature techniques used to create a modern sound in improvisation so don’t miss this chance to get this course.

This book concentrates on:

  • Exercises to gain ability using two major triads
  • Études to help you hear what these two triad pair combinations sound like in real music.
  • Exercises that can be used for singing to help you gain key retention skills.
  • Tips on how to practice this combination.
  • Ways to apply advanced harmonic progressions using this two triad pair combination.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19C Two Triad Pair

I recommend using Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19 Two Triad Pair or any book in the Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series for ear training because they can really help you with your Key Retention. First let me explain what key retention is, and why it is important. Many students tend to modulate (change keys) way too much when they are listening to music. The more you modulate the harder it is to understand and hear music. That is not to say that you shouldn’t modulate ever, but most students modulate for instance, on every chord of a chord progression.

This isn’t ideal for hearing music and if you can develop the ability to not modulate as much, and to stay grounded within the key center you will find it easier to hear and play over various types of music. I originally put out a course called Key Retention Builder to address this issue, and it has helped many musicians to stop modulating so much.

Think of the Key Retention Builder course as a “clinical” way help you avoid modulating at the drop of a dime (or chord change). While this two triad pair book gets you going in the right direction you also need to apply this ability to real music. To address this I released a series of direct application courses called Practice Perfect Applied Ear Training which so far contains the following series:

This book concentrates on:

  • Mastering your ability to work with two triad pairs.
  • Understanding and applying the often used improvisation concept.
  • Exercises to built up technical skills with triads.
  • Tips to apply this combination in many ways.
  • Ways to apply advanced harmonic progressions using this two triad pair combination.

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19D Two Triad Pair

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Volume 19D Two Triad Pair is one of the books in this series that is a must own. The triads; C, E, G and D, F, B are used which form a V7 to I cadence. This is a great place to start developing your ability to play harmonically rather than always relying on scales.

The Pitch Class Set Improvisation exercises in the two triad pair course are presented in all 12 keys so you can really develop a more harmonic palette in your soloing. Beside that it really helps you to master a major and diminished triad.

This is an exercise that Charlie Banacos gave me years ago to help me get out of the rut of always using scales when I improvised. It really works too. Within hours I was playing and hearing more harmonically derived melodies. Highly recommend this as a must own in the series.

This book concentrates on:

  • Getting you to hear more harmonically in your soloing.
  • Develop your ability with a major and diminished triad
  • Built up technical skills with triads on your instrument.
  • Give you practice tips to help with hearing and playing this combination.
  • Ways to apply advanced harmonic progressions using this two triad pair combination.

Harmonic-and-Melodic-Equivalence-V19E-two-triad-pair-by-Bruce-Arnold-for-Muse-Eek-Publishing-Inc-Harmonic-and-Melodic-Equivalence-Series

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence V19E Two Triad Pair

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Volume 19E Two Triad Pair is one of the most common triad pairs. A major triad combined with a major triad a tritone apart whos part scale is a diminished scale

One thing that is worth pointing out about this combination but really all combinations in this series is the fact that each of these three note pairs forms a series of unique melodies. Most of the combinations that are explored in this series of books come from only a few scales. So really, in most cases, you are looking at a bunch of ways to make melodies with six notes from seven different scales: Major, Melodic Minor Ascending, Harmonic Minor, Harmonic Major, Diminished, Whole Tone and Symmetrical Augmented.

Various combinations will work better or certain modes within these seven scales. The non tertial combinations are awesome for chord voicings, but the tertial combinations can be very interesting as chords too, if you put a different bass note underneath the triad.

In general, think of each two triad pair volume in this series as a way to make chords and melodies that form a cohesive whole mostly because of the sound of the various intervals found within.

The tertial combinations: major, minor, diminished or augmented chords are such common structures in all of music so when you pivot back and forth between these combination you create a very intriguing sound for the listener. While the non-tertial combinations create very modern and melodic and chords – some of them quite exotic – but all are wonderful; it just takes a bit longer to hear and implement these possibilities.

This book concentrates on:

  • Developing facility moving back and forth between two major triads.
  • Understanding all the implications of a diminished scale
  • Seeing all the internal relationships that this combination forms.
  • Tried and true practice ideas that will help master this combination.
  • Ways to apply advanced harmonic progressions using this two triad pair combination.

The Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Volume 19F Two Triad Pair is like the Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Volume 19D Two Triad Pair in that the two triads form a chord progressions as well as being part of a common scale. Since most students have mostly use scales when they improvise this two triad pair volume is great because it can also get you to add in a harmonic element to your improvisations.

Each volume in this series has its own strengths. Some combinations, especially the non-tertial ones make excellent chords as well as a modern melodic sound. The triadic based courses like this one can give you very interesting sounds but usually aren’t that great as stand alone chords for a pianist or guitarist. That said, of course if you add in other bass notes below these triads you get a lot of great sounds.

This book concentrates on:

  • Developing your ability to play two consecutive diminished triads
  • Helping you create interesting melodies that can function both harmonically and melodically over various chord changes.
  • Truly understanding all the possible applications that you can derive from two consecutive diminished chords.
  • Ways to practice these two triad pairs in order to use them in your improvisations.
  • Ways to apply advanced harmonic progressions using this two triad pair combination.

Melodic Rotations Learning to Improvise More Based on the Composition

Playing Off The Melody Stella is a course that teaches you how to bring more compositional elements into your improvisation; in other words, playing more off the melody of the song that you are improvising over. Improvisers frequently create these kinds of compositionally related melodies through permutation or rotation. There are three previously published books on permutating 2,3 and 4 note melodies in the Modal Sequencing series.

Permutation problems arise when you have a melody in which the main theme is more than four notes. In this situation the use of permutation gets out of hand pretty quickly. For instance, a six note melody has 720 permutations (or 8640 permutations if we consider octave transposition). In order to work with larger themes, rotations are used. For a six note melody there are only 6 rotations. This is a much more workable number for a musician to practice and gain fluidity with. Even with only six rotations the amount of exercises that can be derived is enormous. Exercises are given using treble and bass clef plus there are bass clef versions for 5 and 6 string bass. Factor in all 3 different types of exercises, and you get a whopping 8016 pages of exercises!

Melodic Rotations for Stella By Starlight Melody

This course works with the first six notes of the jazz standard Stella By Starlight. You will find from playing through the three different types of exercises found in this course that the melodies created are really useful and sound great! This course is comprised of three main exercises. First, the exercises concentrate on one rotation at a time and starting it on every eighth note of the measure. Second, you work with changing between the six rotations throughout the song, again on every eighth combination. Third, you change the rhythm and the rotation throughout the song. Working on these three levels will change your playing almost immediately. Playing the melody through minor 2nds, major 2nd, minor 3rds, major 3rds and augmented 4ths are also included. All exercises are presented in all 12 keys. This gives you the “old school” approach to learning a jazz standard. Learn it in all keys and then you REALLY know it.

Examples from the Playing Off The Melody Stella Course

All exercises found in the Playing Off The Melody Stella course have midi files. This will allow you to not only hear the melodies but also check accuracy as you practice. There are also MP3s with piano, bass and drums, at 3 different tempos, and in all keys, so that you can play the examples with real music. A PDF is included that talks about each exercise and how it is organized as well as practice tips and application ideas. Whether you dive head first into these exercises right away or not, it is important that you understand the power of rotations which this course will supply. You will be really surprised by how  just a couple of minutes a day reading through these examples will affect your playing. Seriously folks, rotations will change your playing dramatically and quickly.

Here are a few examples from the course. A complete list of the different types of exercises can also be found below.

What people are saying:

Man Bruce this is Dope! I never knew what rotations were before this course and now I see that they are the key to the kind of playing that I’ve always striven towards. These exercises are like perfect solos. By just improvising a few more notes in the rests I have a great solo that is so closely related to the song. Y. Songland

I’ve been searching for a course like this my whole life. I hope Bruce puts out courses like this for many jazz standards! G. Idi

Not only is this a great idea for melodies but my phrasing has changed within days. R. Bellham

I’m a 5 and 6 string bass player and also have the Melodic Rotation 012345 book which I’m enjoying quite a bit. This Playing Off The Melody Stella book takes things in an entirely new direction. It makes me realize many new things that I can do with the Melodic Rotation 012345 book but also is really helping me to get the basics of soloing over jazz standards together. A. Newton

Melodic Rotations Learning to Improvise More Based on the Composition

Melodic Rotations 012345 is a course that teaches you how to bring more compositional elements into your improvisation; in other words, playing more off the melody of the song that you are improvising over. Improvisers frequently create these kinds of compositionally related melodies through permutation or rotation. There are three previously published books on permutating 2,3 and 4 note melodies in the Modal Sequencing series.

For a six note melody there are only 6 rotations. This is a much more workable number for a musician to practice and gain fluidity with. Even with only six rotations the amount of exercises that can be derived is enormous. These rotations can be moved through various cycles; octave rotations can be used as well as many other types of exercises. So there are countless exercises in this course. Exercises are given using treble and bass clef plus there are bass clef versions for 5 and 6 string bass. Factor in all 17 different types of exercises, and you get a whopping 15,154 pages of exercises.

Melodic Rotations Six Half Step Melody

This course works with a melody that contains six half steps. While this note grouping might seem esoteric, I think you will find from playing through the examples found in this course that the melodies created are really useful and sound great! You will see as you look at the various ways to use rotations, that playing through them with various cycles, scales, octave rotations and other ideas only scratches the surface of the possible combinations. That said, this course is still thousands of pages long and should be thought of as a six month investigation into understanding and then beginning to use these ideas in your composing and improvisation. I’ve given representative examples of many of the ideas that can be found using rotations, however I certainly didn’t cover all combinations of this six note melody. But I think these examples will teach you some of the possible ways to organize and expand upon any melody you encounter.

Examples from the Melodic Rotations 012345 Course

All exercises found in the Melodic Rotations 012345 course have midi files included. This will allow you to not only hear the melodies but also check accuracy as you practice. A PDF is included that talks about each exercise and how it is organized as well as practice tips and application ideas to place these melodies into various musical situations. Whether you dive head first into these exercises right away or not, it is important that you understand the power of rotations which this course will supply. Not only will it give you an understanding of rotations but it can also be used as a sight reading and sight singing book. Reading or singing highly chromatic music is challenging and it is hard to find good exercises to master these kinds of melodies. This course gives you over 15K pages of exercises so it definitely gives you enough examples to master your ability in these areas.

Here are a few examples from the course. A complete list of the different types of exercises can also be found below.

Exercises Found in the Melodic Rotations 012345 Course:

  • 6 Rotations of Six Note Melody
  • Rotations Moving in Minor 2nds

What people are saying:

Thanks Bruce! Really dig the rotations applied to a major scale. I can use that immediately everywhere. R. Gersen

Another massive course from Muse Eek. I had never thought about or knew about rotations. Just reading the PDF has my head spinning with ideas. My favorites are the rotations moving in minor 3rds. I can’t wait to apply those to a Blues progression to hear how well they work over a dominant chord. Thanks!! L. Radison

I’ve been using these exercises for sight singing. It’s hard to find chromatic melodies to sing and this course has them in spades. Highly recommend! O. Burg

I’m a 5 and 6 string bass player and if you are the same you know how hard it is to find music that takes into consideration the full range of these instruments. This course is terrific for learning to read on the 5 and 6 string bass. Read: ledger lines!!!! It also really prepares you for remembering accidentals throughout a measure. I can already feel my playing and reading  improving as I work through! H. Malaney

Harmonic and Melodic Equivalence Series

Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series

Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series

Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series is a collection of courses that teach the use pitch class sets within contemporary improvisation and composition. Think of a pitch class set as any group of two to twelve notes. Yes, a major scale is a pitch class set but there are many other groupings of notes that can give you beautiful new sounds that can be used in any idiom.

In the Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series, we explore how these pitch class sets can inspire creativity and innovation in your music.

Background on Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series

I started working with pitch class sets around 1990 and have created many recordings and books on the subject. As I mentioned pitch class sets can be used in any idiom. In the 30 years that I’ve been using pitch class sets I’ve recorded music using them in the idioms listed below.

The Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series has allowed me to develop a unique approach to blending various musical styles.

Hopefully the examples found above will show you the diversity that can be accomplished using pitch class sets and how they can give even to most simple chord progressions a new and interesting sound.

Through the Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series, you can also learn to apply these concepts in practical scenarios.

Pitch Class Set Improvisation Courses

Along with recording a catalog of music using pitch class sets I also created many books to help students to understand, apply and move their musicianship into a place that allows free use of pitch class sets when improvising and composing. There are four types of courses in the pitch class set improvisation series and they are discussed below.

Each course in the Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series is designed to enhance your understanding of these advanced techniques.

Four Types of Pitch Class Set Improvisation Books

There are four types of books found in the Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series. Each type can be purchased as a bundle or as individual courses. You will find the bundles available on this page. If you want to order specific courses in each series click on the book cover or follow the links provided below to find out more about each of the four series.

Additionally, the Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series offers bundles that make learning more accessible.

  • Applying Pitch Class Set Courses require no knowledge of Pitch Class Set Theory.  These courses primarily give you three note pitch class sets to replace the common chords or chord progressions found in various styles of music.  These replacements can breath new life into even the most simple chord progression.
  • Pitch Class Set Improvisation Études Courses assumes that you understand Pitch Class Set Theory and gives you multiple examples of great sounding melodic lines that can be created using various techniques. You really don’t need to understand Pitch Class Set Theory to read through these books and to be influenced by the melodies. But obviously, knowing what is going on internally with the melodies gives you even more benefit.  These books of course, require that you can read music.
  • Pitch Class Set Theory Courses give you deep knowledge on how to use pitch class set improvisation theory.  These books help you organize, create and apply new and interesting melodies and chords from various combinations of notes.  The Tools for Modern Improvisation and the Bruce Arnold Composition Compilation have been included in this group.  These books give you examples of how you can use Pitch Class Sets to compose and improvise over various styles of music.
  • Pitch Class Set Theory and Practice Courses are books that combine some pitch class set theory with various exercises. These books often assume some knowledge of pitch class set theory.  Pitch Class Sets like any scale or chord can be used in a multitude of ways.  These books highlight many concepts that most students are unaware of thus giving them a new sound to add to their palette.

You can see from the list above that a musician can dabble in Pitch Class Set Improvisation with the Applying Pitch Class Set Courses, work on hearing melodic lines with the Pitch Class Set Improvisation Études Courses, get  involved in understanding this subject in-depth with Pitch Class Set Theory Courses or work with études and the presentation of a pitch class set theory with the Pitch Class Set Theory and Practice Courses.

The Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series encourages musicians to explore their creativity through structured learning.

In general, Pitch Class Set Improvisation Theory is not rocket science but does have some ways of organizing pitches that will seem strange to a novice. Once you understand some of these idiosyncrasies you will find a whole new world of sound opens up for you. When Pitch Class Set Theory is presented in any of theses books, it is written in very simple language and of course you can can always contact us if you have questions.

Moreover, the Pitch Class Set Improvisation Series is tailored to support your musical journey with engaging content.

Applying Pitch Class Set Courses

For those who want to dabble I created a series of books called Applying Pitch Class Set Series. This series requires no knowledge of Pitch Class Set Theory just gives you exercises to apply pitch class sets. Although it doesn’t give you any theory information it is still an excellent series to work through because it helps you to replace traditional harmony with pitch class sets. These four courses are mostly meant for pianists, guitarists and composers because they deal with chords structures.

In the Applying Pitch Class Set Series, you will discover how to seamlessly integrate pitch class sets into your playing.

When first learn pitch class sets there unfortunately isn’t an abundance of music examples of using pitch class sets in improvisation. You of course can find examples of sustained application of Pitch Class Sets like John Coltrane’s late recordings where he used 013 exclusively on various compositions.

But in general, many great artists have signature licks and ideas that are taken or can be easily explained and expanded on via Pitch Class Set Theory.  Thus, I created étude books so that I could read through them to gain an aural, physical and musical knowledge from hearing the melodic lines contained in these books. Obviously the étude books require an ability to read music and are meant for any instrumentalist. Here is a list of books.

One Minute Lesson Series

The One Minute Lesson Series is a collection of three courses that cover many of the subjects that Mr. Arnold often discusses in private lessons.

One-Minute-Lessons-Bundle-by-Bruce-Arnold-for-Muse-Eek-Publishing-Inc-One-Minute-Lessons-Series-222X300

One Minute Lesson Bundle

The One Minute Lesson Bundle gets you all three courses in this series as a digital download. That is 31 videos in total. By owning all three courses you give yourself a rich resource covering the common questions that students often have on the subjects of Phrasing, Harmony and Technique. Don’t be fooled by the simple title of “One Minute Lesson.” Many times there is a video that lasts approximately one minute but each lesson often contains many additional PDFs to flesh out the concept so that you aren’t left with the situation where you find out that there is something you should learn but you don’t have any directions on how to learn it. The One Minute Lessons are the exact opposite. They bring up a important musical topic and give you concrete ways to solve each problem.

What is The One Minute Lesson Series?

These One Minute Lessons cover many of the topics I discuss with my private students. These conversations sometimes arise because a student asks me about a certain subject but more often it’s because I hear a weakness in their playing or musical perception. The One Minute Lesson is not meant to be an exhaustive study; of any particular subject rather it is an insight into one subject that is sometimes small, sometimes big but always important.

More Info on the One Minute Lesson Bundle

At the outset you should realize that some of these “One Minute Lessons” have much more content than others depending on the subject. This variance in the amount of material supplied in a One Minute Lesson is usually caused by the subject presented. Sometimes additional PDFs with specific exercises and MP3s and Midi files will be supplied to help a student master a particular subject but other times it might just be a lesson where I’m nudging a student to keep something important in mind or refine their understanding of something they might know but not completely understand. In general I think these “One Minute Lessons” should be watched every few years as you work on your musical skills because different subjects will become important to your development at different times.

The Jam Tracks Series is a collection of five courses that gives you a wide variety of music to use to apply scales, arpeggios, approach notes or anything else to a musical situation. Arguably the most important you can do with anything you learn is to try to use it with real music so that you can ingrain the information. At Muse Eek we call this “changing the context.” If you change the “context” in which you apply something that you are practicing it will go deeper into your memory. Also by applying musical ideas to real music you now incorporate rhythm and all other aspects of music at the same time. This is crucial to getting to point of naturally using the any technique in a musical situation.

Within each course in the Jam Tracks Series you will see the tracks are included in all 12 keys. In most cases the included chord types cover the concept of the course in all common situations. In many cases the Harmonic Major modes are used over common Secondary Dominant chords. Depending on how you hear those chords you would either think of the scale from the root of the chord or from the root of the key center. The accompanying PDF will go through some of the common uses these modes. Certainly tunes like “Some Day My Prince Will Come” use two Harmonic Minor Modes just in the first four bars
