Applying 013 Chord Voicing

Application of Pitch Class Set Theory to Traditional Harmony

A Great Place To Start

"Applying 013 Chord Voicings" is a great course if you want an introduction to pitch class set improvisation and want to start with applying chord voicings derived for a pitch class set to common chord progressions.  You don't need to know all the theory behind pitch class sets you can just start applying a set of chord voicings to a common chord progression.  Later if you want to learn all the other cool stuff you can do with pitch class sets you can get the "Sonic Resource Guide" and get a deep background.

What the Applying 013 Chord Voicing Course is all About

"Applying 013 Chord Voicings" provides a student interested in 013 with 12 études one in each key that are seven pages in length. These études apply 013 voicings to the common chord progression II7, V7, I-7, VI7. It is often hard for a student to see how to apply 013 to common musical situations, but these études demonstrate good voice leading examples along with reharmonization principles that create smooth movement with 013s. These études are meant for pianist and guitarists but could also be used by any instrumentalist to further their knowledge and application of pitch class sets to traditional harmonic situations. Many harmonic reharmonizations are also employed in "Applying 013 Chord Voicings." It is an excellent way to see the ins and outs of applying pitch class sets to traditional harmony.

Voice Leading and Applying 013 Chord Voicings

For most students the hardest part of applying 013 chord voicings to real music is developing good voice leading and know where reharmonization can facilitate that process. This course gives you plenty of examples of both voice leading and the use of reharmonization.

Overview of Applying 013 Chord Voicings Course

"Applying 013 Chord Voicings" gives you 12 études, one in each key using the chord progression II7, V7, I-7, VI7. The études in this course use traditional chord progression which helps a student see multiple ways to voice 013 chord voicings in these situations.

Many Types of Files to Use

"Applying 013 Chord Voicings" offers you many types of PDFs and MP3s to choose from depending on your instrument and application. There are files for pianist or guitarist, up or down an octave and with or without bass and cymbal accompaniment. Midifiles are included in you want to change the tempo of a étude.

Applying 013 Chord Voicings" Gives You Everything You Need

As you can see above the études are written in conventional staff notation. Both with one staff and a grand staff. For guitarists chord diagrams are also include. Keep in mind that in some cases octaves have been changed in the various files that are available in this course to make an étude more playable on the guitar. A version with no alteration has also been included.

These études could be used with an ensemble, solo piano or guitar performance. Some sections of these études may be better used in one or the other depending upon their range. If voicings go to low in register they can conflict with a bass players range so keep this in mind as you work through the course.

Applying 013 Chord Voicings Effectively

Learning to effectively apply chord voicings based on 013 is quite challenging for most students. There are many factors at work that make this difficult:

  • Chord Voicings are not tertial structures.
  • 013 can represent any chord type, which is an unique characteristic.
  • They use tension combinations that are not usual in traditional harmony.
  • For guitarists, some voicings require a very large finger spread.
  • It can be hard to hear a whole progression where all chords are 013.

Because the application of 013 in jazz, rock and blues is so recent, there also isn’t a lot of music available to help you acclimate to the 013 sound. Consequently many students only dabble with the concept and then move This is unfortunate because the 013 sound isn’t particularly dissonant in many applications, and if voicings are properly placed on the guitar fretboard, many of the larger stretches can be avoided.

All of These Issues Were Taken in Account with the "Applying 013 Chord Voicings" Course

These études will really help you to see the application of 013 pitch class set to a traditional harmonic situation. If you are a guitarist with limited sight reading skills you will be right at home because chord diagrams are given for each chord voicing. Get started today with modernizing your chord playing and learning some new sounds.
