013 Hexatonic Études: Pitch Class Set Exercises for Dominant 7th Key Center
013 Hexatonic Études: Pitch Class Set Exercises for Dominant 7th Key Center
“013 Hexatonic Études: Pitch Class Set Exercises for Dominant 7th Key Center” contains 336 études exploring 28 hexatonic scales ( 6 note scale) in all keys. Each of these 28 hexatonic scales can be played over a dominant 7th chord. A dominant 7th of course is one of the most commonly used chords in music so if you are looking for new sounds to explore these études are an excellent resource. Each étude is played at three different tempos so it is good for beginning to advanced students. Midi files are also included so you can play these études at any tempo. All études are played over a dominant 7th chord which repeats every measure, so you can hear exactly what each étude will sound like in a real musical situation. It will also improve your key center recognition when it comes to a dominant key center. These études can be used as an ear training exercise as well; you can either transcribe the étude or a more general ( and a lot more fun ) ear training exercise is see how quickly you can identify the 6 notes that are being used in the étude. These études are all written on the 16th note metric level so they are also a great way to develop your ability to sight read 16th notes. Each étude is one page in length so reading one or two études each day is a quick way to improve your sight reading or ear training skills.
What are Hexatonic Études?
The “013 Hexatonic Études” are composed of 2 three note groups of notes that alternate back and forth using two, three or four notes from each group. This pivot back and forth between two different three note groups creates a very modern sound. In these specific études we are pivoting back and forth between 2 three note groups whose internal structure is made up of a half step and a minor third. Using pitch class set theory we would call this grouping an 013 which is just a way of looking at the intervals contained within the three note group. The course will explain this idea of thinking with pitch class sets which is easy but takes a little explanation.

- These études really turned my head around to think in a different way. I’ve mostly been just listening over the last few weeks to get these sounds into my head. Since they are all 6 note scales like a Blues scale I’ve been thinking that this could be the new Blues scales of the 21st century! F. Goings
- I’m always looking for more sight reading material especially 16th note rhythms. This has been a real fun study for me. I love the fact that you get to hear the key center via the 7th chord which is helping my ear training at the same time I’m improving my reading skills. R. Thomson
- I love the whole concept of this study. I’m always looking for new creative ideas to add into my playing at currently this is at the top of the listA. Wong.
