Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations

Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations: Pitch Class Set Exercises for Dominant 7th Key Center

"Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations" explores the common 3 note arpeggios, i.e. Major, Minor, Diminished and Augmented but more importantly it includes the long overlooked 3 note arpeggios that are not built in 3rds.

There are 12 basic 3 note groupings when boiled down to their basic interval content. This book explores these relationships with a host of exercises that help you develop unique applications of these structures. Études are included that help you hear new melodic and rhythmic ideas for these 3 note combinations. The études can be used to develop your sight reading skills, transcription ability, as well as ear training exercises or just to listen to and take in the unique new sounds.

Arpeggios not built in 3rds?

"Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations" is meant as a guide to help you explore 3 note combinations both familiar and new. Most students have worked with arpeggios that are built in thirds which are included in this study but you also get many other less discussed 3 note groupings that give very intriguing sounds. Since many of the sounds found in this book will be new to students it is recommended that you divide your time between technical exercises that will develop your physical ability on your instrument and ear training studies to help you get the sounds of these combinations into your memory so that you can express them freely.

What's are these other 3 note arpeggios that aren't built in 3rds?

There are many books that discuss the use of arpeggios in music. Unfortunately most of these only discuss chords that are built in thirds. While chords built in thirds are very common in music there are also other arpeggios that are not built in thirds that are commonly used and they can be a great resource for finding new melodic and chordal ideas to play over various musical situations. You can approach the use of these non-tertial (a chord or melody not built in thirds) combinations in a couple of ways: think of the non-tertial group of notes as a replacement for a tertial (a chord or melody built in thirds) arpeggio. For instance, if you had the notes C, E, G you could replace those with C, D, G in most musical situations. In many cases this will give you a more modern sound while still representing the initial triadic sound of C, E, G. You can also extend this idea when you start composing music in which you are only using these non-triadic combinations. This creates a very intriguing sound both melodically and harmonically. Depending on the three note combination you pick it can result in many different types of sounds from beautiful consonant music to highly dissonant. These non-triadic combinations can be used in any style of music from rock to jazz to classical. They all work well but keep in mind that the combination you pick will radically affect the type of sound you are trying to create. To see some examples of using these non-tertial combinations check out the book “Tools for Modern Improvisation” which will give you scores and MP3s in various musical styles, in which you can hear some music using these different non-triadic combinations.
