“Trichord Ear Training All 3 Note Combination Singing Exercises” is a comprehensive course with singing exercises that cover all three note melodic combinations within one octave in all keys. “Trichord” just means a 3 note arpeggio that may or may not be built in 3rds. This course covers all 3 note melodic combinations in all keys so it is an excellent course for finding those melodic combinations that cause you problems as well as developing your ability to hear contemporary melodies that are constructed using any interval combination. Each group of notes uses a different combination of instruments so it’s is also good to get your ear use to different instrumental colors. This course is also an excellent companion course for the Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations or the “Fanatics Guide to Ear Training and Sight Singing Volume One.” 13,607 MP3s are included in this course which first play you a drone to create a key center, and then require you to sing a three note melodic combination from a list of 18 possibilities. These exercises are repeated in all keys and at three different tempos to help to ingrain these three note combinations. The challenge presented by the three different tempos makes this study excellent for a beginner to an advanced student because they are given a limited amount of time to sing the three pitches before the notes are played. A student is quizzed on 21 unique combinations of notes thus covering all melodic possibilities. With each of the 21 groups a different sound is used for the drone and for the playing of the answer. Having a different drone sounds will help those students who have problems with instrumental timbre. The fact that some instruments sustain well while others don’t, makes the comprehension of the key center less or more difficult.

The ability to sing all the three note melodic combinations in Trichord Ear Training is crucial to using these combinations in either melodic or chordal situations. The time factor presented by the different tempos of the exercises also helps a student to progress in the speed of their response. This is particularly important for improvising musicians or singers and other instrumentalists who need to deal with intonation. It is assumed that you understand the Contextual Ear Training concept before working on these exercises. When you are singing the three notes you are not trying to hear the distance between those melodic notes; you are trying to memorize what these notes sound like in a key center. This is the reason why you hear the drone before you sing each exercise. It is recommended that you are getting at least 60% correct answers with the “One Note Ear Training” exercise before working with this course.

Recommended way to proceed with the course

When practicing with each level of this book it is recommended that you keep a list of the examples that cause you problems. Placing those problem exercises into a separate playlist will help you to zero in on them, and allow you to be more productive with your practice time. If you get stuck on an example that you are unable to sing correctly you can skip over that exercise and come back to it later rather than creating the frustration of getting stuck on a certain point in the course.
