If we look at the bigger picture Key Note Recognition is just another way to do “key center” based ear training. BUT the important thing to start realizing with ear training is you need to do it in many different contexts so that your mind can develop a well rounded ear training sense. This is also why you will notice we have so many differing types of ear training products. We are trying to give your ear training in as many contexts as possible to help your mind see the bigger picture.
Key Note Recognition contains many levels
The Key Note Recognition series gives you many levels using different instruments and ensemble combinations. This holistic approach helps a musician developed the skills to do your training in real time with real music. It is recommended that you work with the Key Note Recognition courses in the following order:
- Key Note Recognition Voice Ear Training
- Key Note Recognition Piano Ear Training
- Key Note Recognition Organ Ear Training
- Key Note Recognition Jazz Guitar Ear Training
Each volume listed above gets progressively harder. The main factor in it’s difficulty is what chord progression or combination of notes that are used to create the key center. For instance with the Key Note Recognition Voice triads are used to create the key center while the Key Note Recognition Jazz Piano uses seventh chords, Key Note Recognition Organ uses seventh chords with added tensions and finally the Key Note Recognition with Jazz Guitar uses seventh chords with many tensions. If you are more advanced musician who has experience hearing key centers formed the seventh chords then please check the example MP3s found on each page of this series to see which level is appropriate.
To play “by ear” a musician must first sense the key of a chord or chord progression.
You must also be able to sense key modulations in order to follow chord progressions that change key. The exercise found in this book is crucial to developing these skills.

Key Note Recognition will give you the power to follow unfamiliar chord changes and get a quick sense of where keys are changing. This is the first step in developing:

Key Note Recognition Jazz Guitar Ear Training contains five levels for a total of 360 MP3s
The five levels give you a keynote in one of five possible octaves. By testing you in various octaves it greatly enhances your ability to use this ear training technique in real music.
Each of the five levels has 36 exercises that are broken up into three levels. Each of the three levels gains in velocity so that you can build up the ability to get instant recognition.

It’s time to expand your ear training exercises.
Congratulations on passing out of Ear Training One Note! Now that you have started on Key Note Recognition. It is time to expand into applying your ear training skills directly to real music through two series of courses.
There are many different courses that make up the Practice Perfect Applied Ear Training and the Direct Application Ear Training. When available listen to the MP3 examples to decide on which level is best for you.
You can also start working on the Melodic and Rhythmic Ear Training.

Now that you are moving into the more advanced levels of Ear Training it is important that you check in every few months so Mr. Arnold can check on your process. It’s easy to go off track with the ear training so keep in touch and make sure you are improving at your fastest pace.

Where do I go after I finish Key Note Recognition?
Once you are getting 80% correct notes on any level of the Key Note Recognition you can start working with Ear Training Two Note Beginning. That said, you should also complete all levels and all four courses that are contained in the Key Note Recognition group.

- I’m liking this new approach to keynote recognition. I appreciate the fact that each volume gets progressively harder. For instance, keynote recognition voice just has simple triads for the cadence while keynote recognition Jazz Guitar uses typical seventh chords. I’m finding this change from the ear training one note books to the keynote recognition to be quite difficult. I also like the fact that there’s multiple levels and speeds of the exercise and different octaves used as the keynote. Personally I have a particular problem with the low register. - I’ve long-awaited muse-eek.com to put out an ear training product using an Jazz Guitar sound. For some reason I find my aural comprehension skills are much weaker when an Jazz Guitar is used.
