The Vocal Ear Training Starts here with the: Ear Training One Note Vocal Version
Vocal Ear Training is the best ear training system for a vocalist!
This Vocal Ear Training really works! Here is what students are saying about the Ear Training One Note™ Vocal Version:
- “My accuracy is better with this version than with Ear Training One Note Complete with Piano”
- “I like it – the high end seemed much clearer to me. Also just refreshing to hear voices after all the piano stuff.”
- “Not having the tempered tuning of the piano seems to make the notes easier to detect especially in the low and high range.”
- “I just like the sound of voices better than a piano so I’m sold on the vocal edition”
Universally better? Is it the magic bullet?
Maybe Yes, Maybe No. Students who didn’t do much ear training each day noticed no difference (no surprise there). Other students who applied themselves more rigorously did not notice any improvement in their recognition initially BUT SOME DID; so if you are having problems with Ear Training One Note using a piano sound you might try the Vocal version and see if you are one of the people it can help.
Why is a voice different from a piano
A piano uses tempered tuning so that it can play in all keys. This tempered tuning, which started back in the age of Bach allowed music to be played on one keyboard in all keys. The trade-off was you had to de-tune notes so that every key would sound OK. Thus as you move up and down the keyboard notes get progressively more out of tune. Obviously in the long run you need to be able to hear the notes of the piano correctly, with this Contextual based ear training BUT for the beginner sometimes using the voice which is singing each pitch EXACTLY in tune can help to take one variable out of the equation and makes it easier to progress.
Great for vocalist and choir members
Certainly if you are a singer, work with a choir or multiple voice band this vocal version of ear training one note exercise is exactly what you need to hear what notes are being sung by your fellow vocalists.
But What is Ear Training One Note?
The idea of hearing sound based on a “key center” as opposed to an “interval” really began a revolution in the way musicians perceive sound. Most seasoned musicians hear this way naturally after years of playing but with Ear Training One Note a student can fast forward their learning so that they can experience all these years of ear training in a fraction of the time.
Hearing within a key center
If you are just becoming aware of this idea of “hearing within a key center” let’s look at a little history of ear training for musicians. The “Interval” method of Ear Training has been taught in music schools for literally hundreds of years and rarely been questioned. This method is based on hearing the distance between each note with no regard to a key center. If you are only using intervals for ear training you will develop a host of problems, only one of which is great difficulty improvising with others in a playing situation where music is going by in Real Time.
A detailed discussion
There is a detailed discussion of “interval” vs. “key center” ear training in the book that accompanies all of our beginner’s ear training books. Make sure to read this and our FAQS to understand all different aspects of ear training.
The essence of this “key center” method.
By learning the sound of all 12 notes within a “key center” you develop a completely different way of approaching ear training. With the “key center” method if you hear an “E” played in the key of C, you are not thinking that the note is four half steps above the root or in some interval relationship to any other note –your are recognizing the sound of a 3rd because you have memorized that sound within a “key center.”
Ear Training One Note Series teaches you the “Key Center” process.
By working with the audio files in the Ear Training One Note Series over time, you gain the ability to recognize the sound of all 12 notes with a “key center.” For some students this will be a quick and painless rebooting of the way they hear sound; for others it can be a frustrating path with many possible pitfalls.

- What people are saying:
-
- Mr. Arnold gave me a copy of the Vocal Ear Training One Note™ Beginning. I was having quite a hard time with the One Note Ear Training Piano Version. He explained that a piano has tempered tuning so the notes go more and more out of tune as you move up and down the keyboard. I was really having problems with the low and high range and I seem to be doing better with this version. G. Charles
- I’m a singer in a church choir so I obviously found this version to be much more attune to my affinities. The high level of intonation with the voice made this easier for me and it’s just a nicer sound. If I have a choice between hearing a voice and an instrument. I’ll pick the voice any day. A. Chatfield
- I haven’t notice that my recognition is better versus the One Note Ear Training Piano Version but I have to say the sound of the voice is much more relaxing so I’m doing the ear training more often which is what is recommended. H. Cornell
- Kudos to Bruce for always reaching forward to try and find ways to help us develop our ears quicker. Love the new Vocal edition. Nice sounds and hearing the low notes seems easier. E. Morgan
- I haven’t seen much difference with the vocal edition but I have to admit I fall off the wagon every few months and don’t do the ear training as I should. Since I got the Vocal Version I have been doing it more. I like the voice sound and it’s also made me realize that I can’t just ignore ear training it’s not going to magically get better unless I work on it. W. Lee
