Movie Score Ear Training
Exercises for an applied music environment
Movie scores may seem like an odd place to start with applied ear training. I started with this idiom because many times movie score music is in a minor key and this is something that most students of ear training find difficult. I also start with movie scores because that was the 1st place that I started to actually use my contextual ear training skills successfully. You will see from listening to the examples further down the page that there is a variety of different types of tracks included. I tried to get tracks that had simple harmonic pads, moving melodic lines, changing base lines but also tried to stay away from examples that had too many chord changes. This collection should be a good choice for any student of ear training that is getting around 50% correct notes with the One Note Ear Training Exercises.
The Practice Perfect series of books provides multiple ways for a musician to hone their ear training skills through exercises that teach using real time application within a music environment. That is, these exercises place a musician in a real live music situation simulating the contexts most associated with performance.
Two different types of exercises are included:
Volume One of the Practice Perfect Applied Ear Training is a collection of 12 different audio tracks where you are prompted to sing a specific degree in the key center. There is also 13 tracks where you hear a note and have to guess what that note is as real music is played. The tracks have the following characteristics:
Here are some ways to prepare yourself before beginning the exercises:
Keep in mind that each of the 12 tracks has three different audio files. One MP3s where a soprano voice singing the answer and two others with Alto and Tenor singing the answers. There are various examples of all three of these below:
Keep in mind that each of the 13 tracks has three different audio files. A Long, Medium and Short MP3 are included for each track. The speed at which you hear the notes to guess approximately double in tempo for each level. There are various examples of all three of these below:
I love the whole idea of the Practice Perfect Series. It only makes sense to practice ear training and other techniques in a applied environment. It is also a heck of a lot more fun! C. Wayne
I’m a person that absolutely hates rote exercises so this Practice Perfect series is “Perfect” for me. I can play my guitar and develop aural skills all at the same time. D. Gau
I contacted Mr. Arnold and he suggested I start with the Applied ET Volume One course and it has really helped me to hear songs in a minor key. I’ve been getting around 60% on the Ear Training One Note Complete and Contextual Ear Training. But I also started the Ear Training One Note With Degrees and that is where my problems with minor keys showed up. I always hear the key a minor 3rd up. So if I’m in A minor I hear it in C Major. Mr. Arnold says this is a common problem and working with the Applied ET V1 as well as the Key Retention Builder will fix my problems. Also having problems with the non-diatonic notes in all cases but Mr. Arnold said it was time to start applying my skills to real music. T. Young
I’ve been using many of Muse-eek’s Direct Application books. This Practice Perfect Series seems like a natural outgrowth of that concept. Keep em coming! T. Mann
I like this Volume One of this series because it concentrates on Minorish key centers something that I’m inherently weak at. Y. Cervanka
