Jazz Standard Ear Training V3 by Bruce Arnold
Jazz Standard Ear Training V3 continues with 10 more Jazz Standards. These standards will increase your ability to maintain a key center by testing you with songs that have much more complicated chord progressions. If you have worked your way up from Applied Jazz Standard Ear Training V1 then you know that each volume has gotten progressively harder. One recommendation we have is if you find a particular song that is difficult try also just listening passively to the song over a few weeks to get your mind more use to the chord progression. This will actually help you to hone in on the key center.
If you are just tuning in and wondering what the Applied Jazz Standard Ear Training Series is all about here is a quick synopsis. The overall idea of this series is to help a student develop key retention when it comes to hearing a complete chord progression. As a student progresses with the contextual ear training program they will find that a curious thing happens. They stop hearing every chord as a new key center and start hearing even complicated chord progressions in one key center. Students that have worked through the Scale Analysis course know all about this because that is what that course teaches.
The Practice Perfect Series of books starts with very simple chord progressions and by the time you get to the Applied Jazz Standard Ear Training Series you are working with quite difficult chord changes. You will see as you work through this series how your ear develops the ability to stay within one key center. You will also notice how your ability to hear a key center with progressively more obtuse chord changes broadens your harmonic palette. All these changes will make you a better musician and help you to understand and hear many different types of music.

I’m doing pretty good with the Jazz Standards Ear Training V1 and Jazz Standards Bossa and Samba Ear Training. I find this volume to be much more challenging. These are some of my favorite standards that I play often and it’s going to take some reprogramming to hear all the changes in the key center. I know this is the right way to hear the changes because when I sing the melody I sing it all in one key center. Just have a lot of previous bad training. High recommend all of these Applied Ear Training Courses. U. Samson
I started from the beginning books i.e. Ear Training One Note Complete and Contextual Ear Training. First let me say that I REALLY appreciate Mr. Arnold’s willingness to answer my questions via email. I went off track a few times but I’m here to say that 2 years into this ear training has totally changed my perception of music.
Still have a long ways to go but I’m hearing music both as I play it and as it comes at me in performance situations. These applied ear training courses are just what I need at this point. I listen to them all day because I’m a truck driver. Have to mention the MP3s with Drones. That has really helped me when I’m stuck and can’t hear the key. Listen to the Drone versions for a couple of days and then I’m back on track. K. Silverman
I love using these Jazz Standard Ear Training MP3s as a way to practice standards. I use the “Long” version and just practice the melody, learn the chords and play the pitch on the piano when I’m prompted every 20 seconds or so. Try it! It’s a great way to develop one’s repertoire. W. Anders
OK have to admit some of these tracks are kick my behind. But I’ve found if I just listen to these tracks over and over for a few weeks it really helps me to hear the whole progression in one key. I just have some bad habits to overcome. T. Victor
