Hexatonic Scale Aural Training

This aural training approach is rooted in the Charlie Banacos style of relative pitch, focusing on hearing notes as unique colors within a tonality.

⚠️ Start Here: Important Prerequisite

If you are new to this style of ear training, starting with hexatonic or pitch class sets is not recommended. Most “problems” students face are actually gaps in their 12-note foundation.

Common Aural Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why can’t I identify the pitches against a key instantly? A: There can be many reasons for your lack of ability with this type of ear training. Most of the time working on the two books I recommend on this page will clear up any questions but you can always send me an email if you have further questions. Q: Should I use intervals to figure these out? A: No. In the Banacos method, we avoid interval “math.” You must hear each note’s specific color relative to the tonic. This can take time and even more time if you have learned intervals first. So be patient, everyone gets this ear training that sticks with it. I’ve been teaching this ear training for over 40 years and every student has developed this ability that stuck with it. But you must work on it everyday!

Passed the Test? Your Next Step

If you achieved 100% on the diagnostic tests above, your 12-note foundation is solid. You are now ready to apply this “note-as-color” intuition to Hexatonic Pitch Class Sets.
