Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations
Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations: Pitch Class Set Exercises for Dominant 7th Key Center
“Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations” explores the common 3 note arpeggios, i.e. Major, Minor, Diminished and Augmented but more importantly it includes the long overlooked 3 note arpeggios that are not built in 3rds.
There are 12 basic 3 note groupings when boiled down to their basic interval content. This book explores these relationships with a host of exercises that help you develop unique applications of these structures. Études are included that help you hear new melodic and rhythmic ideas for these 3 note combinations. The études can be used to develop your sight reading skills, transcription ability, as well as ear training exercises or just to listen to and take in the unique new sounds.
This course has many related books and courses that will allow you to expand your ability with these 3 note groupings even further. You can see some of these recommended courses below.

Arpeggios not built in 3rds?
“Ultimate Arpeggio 3 Note Combinations” is meant as a guide to help you explore 3 note combinations both familiar and new. Most students have worked with arpeggios that are built in thirds which are included in this study but you also get many other less discussed 3 note groupings that give very intriguing sounds. Since many of the sounds found in this book will be new to students it is recommended that you divide your time between technical exercises that will develop your physical ability on your instrument and ear training studies to help you get the sounds of these combinations into your memory so that you can express them freely.
What’s are these other 3 note arpeggios that aren’t built in 3rds?
There are many books that discuss the use of arpeggios in music. Unfortunately most of these only discuss chords that are built in thirds. While chords built in thirds are very common in music there are also other arpeggios that are not built in thirds that are commonly used and they can be a great resource for finding new melodic and chordal ideas to play over various musical situations. You can approach the use of these non-tertial (a chord or melody not built in thirds) combinations in a couple of ways: think of the non-tertial group of notes as a replacement for a tertial (a chord or melody built in thirds) arpeggio. For instance, if you had the notes C, E, G you could replace those with C, D, G in most musical situations. In many cases this will give you a more modern sound while still representing the initial triadic sound of C, E, G. You can also extend this idea when you start composing music in which you are only using these non-triadic combinations. This creates a very intriguing sound both melodically and harmonically. Depending on the three note combination you pick it can result in many different types of sounds from beautiful consonant music to highly dissonant. These non-triadic combinations can be used in any style of music from rock to jazz to classical. They all work well but keep in mind that the combination you pick will radically affect the type of sound you are trying to create. To see some examples of using these non-tertial combinations check out the book “Tools for Modern Improvisation” which will give you scores and MP3s in various musical styles, in which you can hear some music using these different non-triadic combinations.

By also referencing the possible turnaround section of the book you can also you 100s of other chord progressions with this étude. This étude is using any available “013” or half step and minor 3rd combination that is available on each chord. Each set of études is completely different sounding because the type of 3 note grouping that is applied to this chord progression. Some VERY exciting sounds!!
- Listen to the interesting sound that these “013” 3 note grouping make over this chord progression. Click triangle above to see dropdown score. It is recommended that you listen to the Level 3 example first because the faster these types of melodies are played the more our ear makes sense of them. Count off is two measures of half notes playing a C to establish the key center.

Recommended way to proceed with the course
- How to explore this course!
-
- The heart of the book shows each 3 note combination starting with 3 half steps in a row, which we will call 012, all the way to an augmented triad called 048. It is recommended that you start with just one three note group to explore. Although you could start with the 027 combinations because they are the most useful and easy to hear, and then move on to combinations like 013 because they can be applied to any chord type, keep in mind that any grouping you pick to explore will take some time before it bears fruit.
- Spend time with the études either playing them or just listing to the MP3s. This will help you to hear the possibilities of various three note groups and will also help you to decide which 3 note groups you like the most. You will find that these études will help you to develop musical ideas to use in your composition and improvisation.
- There are quite a few recommended exercises for developing these different 3 note combinations but you will also find more and/or expanded ideas in the Chopsbuster section of the muse-eek.com website. The “Atomic Scales” course is a very good set of exercises to improve your technical skills with these 3 note combinations, particularly when they are combined into two 3 note groupings i.e. a hexatonic scale.
- You will find many exercises that combine 2 three note note arpeggios to create a hexatonic scale. This is a sound that is very useful in creating contemporary sound in your playing. This specific course concentrates on symmetrical combinations. In other words it combines two 3 note combinations that are from the same family like three half steps in a row combined with another group of 3 half steps in a row at some other pitch degree. It should be mentioned that you can create very interesting sounds and melodies by combining two different three note groups which is not covered in this course. Most of the combinations that are explored in this book work over a dominant 7th sound. But other chords possibilities are listed when appropriate. Certain three and six note groups work better over certain types of chords. This is discussed to help you understand which combinations are best used with specifics chord types.
- The three note combinations in this book can be used to replace the chords you already use or, they can inspire your compositions and improvisations with fresh ideas.
- When you begin to practice the concepts in this book start slowly and develop speed overtime. Many of these combinations can be very difficult especially on stringed instruments so be careful that you don’t hurt yourself by over practicing or trying to gain speed too quickly.
Just listening can really change your perceptions!
It can’t be stressed enough that just listening to the études in this course can really effect your perception, expand your musical palette and influence your overall musicianship.

- What people are saying:
-
- For many years I’ve wondered how advanced soloist created these very modern sounds. Found my answer in the course. Bruce also gives examples of how you can apply this to jazz standards which really blew my mind. Playing “Stella by Starlight” where all melodies are half steps and minor 3rd as well as all the chords. This is really looking at standards in a highly compositional way as sound completely unique. I thought it all had already been done but this has totally transformed my concept of what can be done to usher in a new era of sounds over any type of style. A totally eye opening course! W. Franks.
- A Tour de force of 3 note sounds. Completely turning my head around so many great new sounds and ways to think about 3 notes. E. Shepherd
- A book for a lifetime of study and so well laid out. The études are great for hearing the direct application of these ideas so you can really hear how awesome they can be! H. Palmer.
