Practice Perfect Applied Ear Training Volume Three by Bruce Arnold
Practice Perfect Applied Ear Training Volume Three concentrates on using contextual ear training with real Heavy Metal songs. Like the Rock Applied Ear Training Course many melodic riffs and odd chord movements can easily throw off your ear. That is why, even though you may not like a certain idiom, it is a good idea to do ear training in that style of music because each style presents its own peculiar idiomatic quarks. Heavy Metal actually is in some ways a close cousin to Jazz because it employs more unusual scales like Phrygian, Locrian, Symmetrical Diminished as well as odd melodic movements often using a tritone. This can definitely throw off your ear training and again points out the importance of the Practice Perfect Series of courses. Remember “context” is always “king.” You need to work with real music to find the situations that are challenging for your ear. You also need to do this in multiple idioms!
The Practice Perfect series of books provides multiple ways for a musician to hone their skills through exercises that teach using real time application within a music environment. That is, these exercises place a musician in a real live music situation simulating the contexts most associated with performance.
Two different types of exercises are included:
Volume Three of the Practice Perfect Applied Ear Training is a collection of 12 different Real Heavy Metal Ear Training tracks were you are prompted to sing a specific degree in the key center. Below are some characteristics that all these tracks include:
Here are some ways to prepare yourself before beginning the exercises:
Keep in mind that each of the 10 tracks has three different audio files. One MP3s where a soprano voice singing the answer and two others with Alto and Tenor singing the answers. There are various examples of all three of these below:
Keep in mind that each of the 12 tracks has three different audio files. A Long, Medium and Short MP3 are included for each track. The speed at which you hear the notes to guess approximately double in tempo for each level. There are various examples of all three of these below:
I own Practice Perfect Volume One and Two. My favorite is the Real Heavy Metal Ear Training tracks because that is the type of music I play and listen to! Would appreciate if you make even more of these!! D. Niemann
The Real Heavy Metal Ear Training exercises are great because they get into scales that are not often found in rock such as Locrian. Being able to work with real music and improve my ear training skills is the only way you would get me to do this type of training. Really get into rock’n out with these tracks. E. Young
Well, why no one has done this before is beyond me. Having Real Heavy Metal Ear Training Tracks and all the other idioms that Bruce covers in his book really makes ear training fun but also points out where my issues are with various types of music and different types of chord progressions and melodies. U. Olsen
Thanks Bruce for this new Practice Perfect Series. It is really making me practice more, which is great! J. Tiegen
