Tools for Music Mastery 2
Tools for Music Mastery 2 Series
The “Tools for Music Mastery 2” is a series of five books geared toward improving a musician’s ability simultaneously in ear training, sight reading, sight singing, time development, music recognition skills. What makes this series unique is that each of the included exercises address all of these aspects of musicianship simultaneously! Since a student’s abilities in each of these areas can vary greatly it is highly recommended that you purchase the bundle edition of “Tools for Music Mastery 2” so that you have access to all levels of these exercises.
The primary reason for creating Tools for Music Mastery 2 is to help students who have difficulty with One Note Ear Training. Specifically hearing the distinct sound of each pitch within a key center. These exercises will REALLY help to nail this important aspect of ear training. Since “Tools for Music Mastery 2” can be used to develop so many different parts of your musicianship some directions are required to help you organize and get the most out of this series. Each exercise has MP3s and midi files that can be used to build up your skills. The midi files are particularly useful if the MP3s are either too fast or too slow for your current ability. It is highly recommended that you use GarageBand, Finale or Sibelius or any other midi file player that gives you control of the tempo when using the midi files. You should spend 15 minutes to one hour a day working with the series.
- Click on triangle to see some recommended ways to use these books.
-
- Each exercise has a drone that creates the tempo and the key center, therefore you will automatically be doing contextual ear training as you read each exercise. Up to one hour a day is recommended for sight reading.
- Time development skills are automatically built into these exercises because the drone is only heard on various beats of the measure or multiple measures. Over time this will automatically build up your ability to feel time on the larger level which in turn will help you to feel time and not count time.
It is also important to note that some count-offs will be on beats other than beat 1 or 3. This is to prepare you for compositions that often arise in which the time reference is not standard. Although this is challenging, preparing yourself to encounter this situation is crucial. - Time development skills are automatically built into these exercises because the drone is only heard on various beats of the measure or multiple measures. Over time this will automatically build up your ability to feel time on the larger level which in turn will help you to feel time and not count time.
- The structure of the exercises automatically broadens your music recognition skills by giving you exercises on multiple metric levels and with varying notation. Therefore it is highly recommended that you use this book as a sight reading book long with the more obvious applications.
- These exercises can be used to build up technical skills. As you move through various exercises you will find that the tempo upgrades of the rhythm exercises will greatly improve your technical ability to play fast. This is also helped by the drone which helps you to feel the “Long Line Rhythm” of the phrases.
- You will find a discussion of Beat Reading later in this book. For best results spend 5 minutes a day reading through one exercise using the three recommended levels.
As mentioned each exercise includes a drone, and starts with simple and slow rhythms. Throughout the course these become more and more difficult, which make them excellent for honing rhythm abilities. It is recommended that you try some of the examples below to test your abilities in all these various areas.
Some students may wish to work on one aspect of their musicianship and therefore there are individual downloads of each book available if needed.

- What people are saying:
-
- Bruce had mentioned this idea of using rhythm and a drone to improve my one note recognition skills. After only a few weeks of working with this idea I had mastered the 3 notes that were continuing to give me problems. I highly recommend this series it does so much all at once! J. Jefferson</em
- I’ve been requesting a product like this from Bruce for quite some time. As many of you know its really hard to deal with always missing certain notes with the one note ear training. This simple exercise of combining rhythm and singing over a drone was the key for me moving to the next level. Probably saved me half a year of further work so can’t recommend this any higher… Buy it!! J. Yang
- I was looking for a sight reading course that would cover different types of notes like halves, quarters, sixteenths and thirty seconds. This fit the bill. I also like the flexibility of having both MP3s and Midi files so I can set the tempo that is best for me. Y. Armstrong
- The Long Line Rhythm ideas in this series are seriously kicking my butt! Thanks for combining so many aspects of my musicianship into one exercise! T. Thorson
