"ChopBusters: 013 Ascending and Descending Diatonic Chords of Major Modes" is part of a series of books that explores various technical exercises to help gain familiarity and technical proficiency with advanced improvisational concepts. This book will also help a student develop the ability to play 013 voicings in modal settings. The chord vocings are playable on any chordal instrument.

This book gives you diatonic chords for all the modes of major. That includes Major, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. The voicings used are in closed position which make them playable on all chordal instruments along with making them physically easier to master. There are MP3s and midi files that come with this "ChopBuster" course which can be used to check your accuracy, but also to slowly build up your speed.

Below are two examples from the “ChopBusters: 013 Ascending and Descending Diatonic Chords of Major Modes."

  • There are 3 MP3s for each étude each gets progressively faster. Since these études make more musical sense when play at a faster tempo the MP3s below start with the fastest MP3 and then get slower. Keep in mind that there are also midifiles for each example so you can play any exercise at any tempo.
  • Level 2 MP3 for example above with 2 measure count-off which also creates the key center.
  • Level 1 for example above with 2 measure count-off which also creates the key center.
  • You can use these exercises for ear training, sight reading, transcription or just to listen to ingrain the sound of a key center created by a modal progression. Remember you can play these examples at any tempo... Super slow or extremely fast with the midifiles that accompany this course.

Pitch Class Set Exercises: Atomic Scales 027:

atomic-scales-027-by-bruce-arnold

Atomic Scales is a fancy name for using three note scales as a vehicle for improvisation and composition. Smaller groups of notes are very useful because they provide more possible applications when applying them to different musical situations. This book applies this idea to both a three note group(s) which I call a trichord(s) and a six note group which I call a hexatonic scale i.e. a six note group of notes. A hexatonic scale can of course be divided up into to groups of three notes (in other words two trichords).
This book concentrates on using a three note scale (pitch class set). The pitch class set used in this book is 027. An example of an 027 would be D, E, A. Another example would be E, F#, C#. This book looks at using both of these 027s. An indepth explanation of 027 is presented along with exercises to apply these groupings to many chord types. A fingering pattern chart is included to help guitarists apply this information to the guitar fretboard along with melodic patterns that any instrumentalist can use to apply 027s to their instrument.
