Key Note Recognition

Key Note Recognition...the next step in building great ears!

Recommended prerequisite:

  • Ear Training: One Note Advanced

Context is the key to success with ear training.

If we look at the bigger picture Key Note Recognition is just another way to do "key center" based ear training. BUT the important thing to start realizing with ear training is you need to do it in many different contexts so that your mind can develop a well rounded ear training sense. This is also why you will notice we have so many differing types of ear training products. We are trying to give your ear training in as many contexts as possible to help your mind see the bigger picture.

To play "by ear" a musician must first sense the key of a chord or chord progression.

You must also be able to sense key modulations in order to follow chord progressions that change key. The exercise found in this book is crucial to developing these skills.

Imagine being able to know the key of a song by playing one note on your instrument.

Key Note Recognition will give you the power to follow unfamiliar chord changes and get a quick sense of where keys are changing. This is the first step in developing:

  • The ability to follow complicated chord changes.
  • The foresight to make informed scale choices.

If you are having a problem following chords, chord progressions or unsure what scale to use by ear, then Key Note Recognition will help you to start solving these problems.

Organize and remember sound based on how you hear it

Organizing and remembering sound based on how you hear it is the real goal of any serious musician. Key Note Recognition brings you another step in this process of gaining that ability. Stop basing your playing on non-musical distinctions such as instrument fingerings, and move more toward remembering and organizing sound based on how you hear it.

A deeper understanding of music

Reacting to music based on how your hear gives you a deeper understanding of, and connection to music. This will also help you to store and retrieve music in your mind from a much more musical place.
