Q: I’ve been at the ear training on and off for months with no noticeable improvement. I stick with it for a while and then get frustrated that I can’t get anywhere and set it aside. For me, I think it would work better if instead of a note name, it was an interval that you came back with. For instance, you play the progression and then the note and after the pause you say “flat 7” or “sharp 6” or what have you.

A: We actually have a version with degrees for both major and minor cadences If you follow the link below:

Learning ear training can be like 10 years of psychotherapy. I know for myself and for some of my students it takes some time to figure out where the problems are as far as what you are doing wrong, why you get discouraged etc… I have some students that we have exchanged 50 emails just trying to get around problems they encounter. Probably the worse thing to do is stop for a month or be on and off with it. Ear Training is all about memory and you memorize things by it first going into your short term memory and then if it’s there long enough and often enough it goes into your permanent memory. That’s actually been proven by a guy named Eric Kandel. He got a Nobel prize for it a few years back. He has been doing a “Brain Series” on Charlie Rose for a few years now. You should check out those episodes they are quite fascinating. So ear training is all about memory and patience… BUT you can also be thinking about it or doing it in a slightly wrong way and that’s where I come in to try and find those things and correct them so you improve quicker and don’t develop bad habits.
