Bass Guitar Practice with New York Guitar Method Volume One

Q: I just bought New York Guitar Method Volume One, I’m a completely beginner and would like to focus on bass guitar. Does it make sense to start with New York Guitar Method Volume One or would you recommend another approach? if it’s New York Guitar Method Volume One, should I do a transposition to the bass guitar scale ? please advise.

A: Nice to hear from you. New York Guitar Method Volume One will work fine for bass guitar. If you look at the scale page at the end of each chapter you can just use the same fingering but only play 4 strings rather than six. The notes that you see on the staff would just be down an octave from what you are seeing on the scale page so your low E would be the first ledger line below the bass clef. I would like to see your fretboard hand technique if possible. For guitarists I usually recommend getting Guitar Physiology put out by Truefire.com to show you exactly how to play. The fretboard hand recommendations would be the same for bass so if you want to get that I would recommend it. What I usually do is have you learn the C scale starting from “F.” You will see from the scale page that there are 3 notes per string. I’d like you to learn this and send me a video of you playing the scale so I can make sure you are using the proper technique. You can upload to youtube or attach the video to an email if it is small enough.

Once I’m sure you are playing OK there are a few other things I would recommend to use with the New York Guitar Method Volume One. But first let’s make sure you don’t start playing the wrong way and have to start over at a later point because you weren’t playing correctly.
