This video is from “25 Ear Training Tips.” If you already own this, then this isn’t really new, but bear with me. The reason I’m including it here is because students have a tendency to overthink their answers when doing ear training. It’s been pounded into us since childhood to “think before you answer” and this is really exactly what you DON’T want to do with the ear training. You just want to say the first thing that comes into your head. If you are wrong that’s fine, just repeat the exercise a few times so you can hear the correct answer and then move on. Remember, ear training must be close to instantaneous in order to work when you are playing music. You have to develop a conditioned response that is lightning fast. I know it’s hard to overcome the habit of thinking too much because you want to be right. But it’s much more important to do it fast so that your skills become useful when you are playing music in real time.
