Real Music Ear Training Exercises

The Direct Application Ear Training series is a major expansion of our ear training method. It bridges the gap between ear training in a controlled exercise environment to its application in the real world. This is the first course of its kind for students who often experience the frustration of not being able to apply what they have learned from an aural comprehension exercise to a playing, real time situation. Each volume in this series covers a particular kind of key center and for the first time shows not only how they can be built, but also explains why certain key centers can be difficult for students to hear.

Have fun listening a playing along with Direct Application Exercises.

This Direct Application series is also an enjoyable way to do ear training. You can play along with your instrument or just listen passively; whichever works best for you. You can jam along with the tracks as you are tested on various notes or use it as a way to study scales, arpeggios and many other musical elements while you are also being tested with ear training exercises. For the student with limited practice time this is ideal for getting the most out of your schedule. There are six tracks in all 12 keys with each volume, so you get 72 tracks to get you developing your skills. These tracks are graduated in difficulty so that you can build your prowess over time, at your own pace, and in a sensible manner.

Secondary Dominants: Direct Ear Training Application

At it's heart this is an ear training exercise to improve a students ability to apply the Melodic Minor Ascending Modes to secondary dominants and other dominant functions. These exercises help a student learn how they hear secondary dominants and in turn develop an ability to improvise over these chords and recognize their existence via their aural skills.

Applying Ear Training to common chord progressions in crucial

Ear Training is learned in one context at a time. If you spend your time just doing one certain exercise you will find while you gain ability with that specific exercise, you may not be able apply it to "real" music situations. This is why applying ear training to common chord progressions is one of the most important things to do once you have a working knowledge of how all 12 notes sound within a key center. This book contains simple singing and improvisational workouts over chordal jam tracks to put yourself inside these "real" musical situations. They are a fun way to strengthen and test what you are learning.

Knowing and hearing Secondary Dominant Harmony is key to understanding modern music.

Secondary dominant harmony is one of the most commonly found chordal movements in music; "I Got Rhythm" wouldn't exist without it! Being able to hear these chords and how they interact is crucial to playing and writing music. Secondary Dominant harmony chord scales are most commonly associated with the modes of Melodic Minor Ascending. That's why this book concentrates on these 7 modes of Melodic Minor Ascending.

Develop the ability to use "your" ear to make musical decisions.

Developing your ability to instantly recognize what you are hearing in any given chord change is an important skill for any improvising musician or budding composer. This book presents you with chord progressions specifically chosen from my 30 years of teaching ear training because they are likely be heard in one way. This of course won't be universal with all students, but in my experience I have found that the progressions I have provided tend to lead a student's ear in a certain direction. Above all, first use "your" ear to help you decide which scale to use and then tackle these chords progressions accordingly.

Some exercises are simple and some are very difficult but so as long as you are an intermediate player I think you will find the material useful. Hey Muse-eek, How about coming out with an 8 and 16 and 24 bar version? --Not that I've mastered the 2 bar patterns at very slow tempos but I would like to give it a try anyway just to test myself. W. Poulsen
  • These tracks are great for working on jazz tunes. Just take a 32 bar form and you can expand your sense of time and you always know when the 32 bars are up. The book has lots of ideas about time and rhythm, too. D. González.

  • I play piano and I've been using Doing Time with the Blues Volume Two to work on feeling 4 bars as a basic unit of time. The slower the tempo, the harder it gets. Through the exercises in the book and just playing through my favorite blues tunes, I really changed both my perception of time and my ability to keep time without counting. V. Golubev
  • The concept behind these doing time books really works. It has really helped my time and particularly helped me to hold the form when drummers are soloing. Totally Recommend. H. Alvarez
  • I've been working with both the Doing Time with the Blues and the Doing Time with 32 Bars. It can get pretty frustrating, and there were times I almost gave up, but then the payoff came. Certainly not a book for a total beginner though the more I think about it, it could be cool you would just have to be a real fanatic beginner :) Anyway glad I found these books and this time concept. I've found no one else is even talking about these concepts much less offering a product that you can use to master it. Kudos to Muse Eek! P. Kristensen.

Single String Studies for 6 String Bass Guitar Volume One

Single String Studies for 6 String Bass Guitar Volume One

Develop four aspects of learning bass guitar at the same time with Single String Studies for 6 String Bass Guitar Volume One

There are four aspects of learning the guitar that are particularly difficult to master. These are:

  • Learning the names of all the pitches found on the bass guitar.
  • Connecting the notes found on a music staff to their location on the fretboard.
  • Knowing where the notes are on the bass guitar by feel, not by sight.
  • Learning scales without relying on patterns.

The Single String exercises help you learn all four of these difficult techniques simultaneously with one exercise.

The exercises found in the book look deceptively simple but mastering them is one of the hardest things to do for any musician no matter what level they are on. At the same time this book can be used by beginner, intermediate or advanced students, because it is the speed at which you play the exercise that will determine the skill needed to play it correctly. A reminder that the Single String Studies for 5 String Bass Guitar books do require you to read music BUT the notes are all found on the same string for each exercise which actually makes it easier for a beginning student to master each exercise. All exercises use one rhythm: a repeating quarter note so you can spend all your energy playing the correct notes rather than worrying about various rhythms.

These concentrated exercises pay off with great dividends.

If you are having problems with:

  • Learning all the notes on the bass guitar.
  • Connecting the notes of the music staff to their position on the guitar fretboard.
  • playing notes on the bass guitar fretboard without looking at it.
  • Learning all the notes in common scales.

Then Single String Studies is your ticket to mastering these techniques.

Midifiles let you hear the correct pitches and you can control the speed of the exercise.

Midifiles are included in the downloadable version of this book and are downloadable from the muse-eek.com website for the physical version of this book. These files will help you check your accuracy. Students can also use this exercise for ear training if they incorporate the single string exercises and the audio files from MetroDrone.

A few minutes a day with this book will make a huge difference in your ability.

This book will:

  • Make negotiating the bass guitar fretboard second nature.
  • Help you learn how to connect music staff notation to your fretboard.
  • Help you learn the ledger line notes above and below the staff.
  • Help you learn all the notes in common scales.

  • Digital Edition IBSN: 978-1-59489-783-2
  • Physical Edition IBSN: 978-1-890944-97-1
  • 110 pages with midifiles included in digital download and downloadable for the physical edition via our member's area.

  • These exercises really helped me to master those two extra strings. Highly recommended W. Savchenko
  • The idea of mastering scales on one string at a time is so simple. I mean, it makes you wonder why you didn't think of it yourself... Guitarists and Bassists are so position oriented it was nice to find a book with a linear approach. J. Persson
  • These exercises really let you know whether you know the fretboard without looking at it. It took me weeks to read through even one of these exercises with making a mistake. The Midifiles are great you can throw those into Garageband pick your tempo and know whether you got the right pitch. J. Kastelic.

  • It's very difficult to find books that give you any exercises for a five string bass so this book was a welcome addition to my study of the instrument. If you are trying to get used to that extra string this book is great for giving you exercises up and down the low B string to get you up and running. F. Bianchi
  • I found the single string and multiple string études in Single String Studies for 5 String Bass Guitar Volume One to be very helpful. Because each etude covers a different scale in a different key it was idea to helping me get these scales together in a linear fashion on the bass. A. Hoxha
  • I got into 5 string bass a few years ago but hadn't really worked on my reading skills. Getting the lower ledger lines together was killing me. You now how it is. You look at the note with all the freaking ledger lines above or below it and you just say "shoot me now." I had total approach-avoidance. But this book took care of both the low and high ledger line reading. It was great to run into this book, because it forced me to DEAL WITH IT. Now I feel like "Oh yeah, ledger lines? I laugh at you!!!!!" R. Wright.

Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume Two

Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume Two

Continuing the develop of four crucial aspects of learning bass guitar.

Volume Two continues the development of these 4 important bass guitar skills. Again, these are:

  • Learning the names of all the pitches on the bass guitar.
  • Connecting the notes found on a music staff to their location on the bass fretboard.
  • Knowing where the notes are on the bass guitar by feel not by sight.
  • Learning scales without relying on patterns.

The unique exercises in this book help you learn all four of these important techniques simultaneously

In Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume Two the exercises are similar to Volume One but now rather than using traditional 7 note scales for each exercise, you have the introduction of pitch class sets based on 013. 014, 016, 027 and combinations. For more information on pitch class sets and their relationship to modern improvisation please see Sonic Resource Guide or Mr. Arnold's My Music book. Both the aforementioned books will show you applications of pitch class sets to composition and improvisation.

Volume Two continues your development of guitar fretboard mastery by kicking these highly targeted exercises up a notch, making it a challenge for any bass guitarist at any level. Again, this book can be used by beginner, intermediate or advanced students. It's all about the speed at which you play the exercise that will determine the skill needed to play it correctly. A reminder that the Single String Studies books do require you to read music BUT the notes are all found on the same string for each exercise which actually makes it easier for a beginning student to master each exercise. • Well call me crazy but I've worked through Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume One and now I'm starting Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume Two. So far what I see is that Volume Two really kicks it up a notch especially if you are working on these books with an acoustic bass as an intonation study. Basically you are reading 12 tone lines so it is pretty difficult. I contacted Mr. Arnold and he recommended using the MetroDrone audio files with this book to create a key center. This led me into checking out Muse-eek's ear training studies. The combination of the Single String Studies and an understanding of how Contextual Ear Training fits into the bigger picture is still something I'm getting my head around but this is getting quite deep and interesting. I'm hooked, but in a good way. S. Bergman
  • This book kicks butt! If you can read through these studies on one string with no mistakes and not look at the fretboard your a master hands down, and that's what I'm doing! A. Gorley.

  • This isn't exactly a review of Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume Two although I'll say up front it's excellent. I initially got into the book because I wanted to get out of position reading. One day I decided to just play these quarter note melodies in position over a one chord groove. These are unusual melodies with a very modern sound, something I really like. I contacted Mr. Arnold about this and he pointed me to the Sonic Resource Guide and the Time Transformation Book. I have found both of these to be amazing resources for anyone who wants to dig deeper into music. You may never use all the info in them, because that would take several lifetimes, I think! The point is that the single string studies are like a springboard to so many other great things. G. Aranofsky

Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume One

Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume One

Develop four aspects of learning bass guitar at the same time with Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume One

A reminder that the Single String Studies for Bass Guitar books do require you to read music BUT the notes are all found on the same string for each exercise which actually makes it easier for a beginning student to master each exercise.

  • This book looks easy but is rather difficult to play 100% correctly especially if you follow the rules Mr. Arnold sets down. 1. Don't look at the neck. 2. Play only on one string. 3. Use your ear to know whether you are playing the right note. With that in mind it's not easy to get through a whole page without getting off somewhere. What do you get from doing all this. Well for me I know the fretboard without looking and not playing so much in position anymore and my ear is getting better. Yes simple exercise with a big payoff. D. Nicholas
  • I'm somewhere between an intermediate and advanced acoustic bass guitarist. My teacher recommended Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume One to help my intonation. It comes with midifiles so I can play along and check my pitch as a go. In just a few short weeks my intonation has improved dramatically, so what more can you ask for? S. Bergman
  • Mr. Arnold recommended this book for me because I wanted some exercises to help break out of position playing and get a more linear approach to the bass neck. Single String Studies for Bass Guitar Volume One is perfect for that. I just spend 10 minutes a day reading through one page. It took me about 3 months to get through the book but I really feel like I know my scales much better up and down the neck. Mr. Arnold recommended not looking at the fretboard but I found this VERY hard to do. Still, I know that when I look at the fretboard, I risk losing my place in the music. That's something I don't want to do when I'm playing in an ensemble. So that's my next hill to climb. Gonna start the book over again with NO looking at the fretboard! F. Rushefski.
  • I was initially disappointed when I opened up this book. Just a bunch of pages with quarter note rhythms with all notes on one string. I contacted Mr. Arnold to find out what's up because usually the Muse Eek books are great. He pointed out what these exercises were trying to accomplish and also said that this exercise has been assigned by many great music teachers over the last 40 years as a way to break out of position playing and get control of the neck. I had to admit trying to play through one page even at a medium tempo, while not looking at the fretboard and nail every note was beyond me. So I was humbled. So if you are like me and having problems with always playing in one position and getting better control of the fretboard these exercises will do the trick! S. Howell.

  • I've been playing bass about one year and have had a few auditions where I needed to play sixteenth note grooves. I was all over the place with my time so I got Comping Styles for Bass Guitar Volume Two: Funk to help me develop my feel but also get my reading of sixteenth notes together. I found this to be a very useful book. Reading is not easy but not crazy either so it was about right for my current level. If you want a good book to get you started on playing Funk and sixteenth note grooves this one works real well. A bonus was I learned a lot about alternate chord changes for a Blues and Minor Blues. W. Jipp
  • I have been working through the Muse-eek's Rhythm Series and wanted more work with sixteenth notes. This book is a good workout and chord progressions were very cool. Highly Recommend! H. Galore
  • I contacted Bruce a few years ago about recommended material to use to get my sight reading together. He recommended the Rhythms Volume One, Rhythms Volume Two and Comping Styles for Bass Guitar Volume Two: Funk. He recommended I play these progressions with my fingers and with slapping. The rhythms are fairly simple especially if you compare them to Rhythms Volume Two which has some serious syncopation....it's all good stuff. E. Dudley.
  • Well first if you can't read don't get this book, you certainly will need some reading skills as this book is written with staff notation. Mostly 2 and 4 measure bass patterns so once you get the rhythm pattern down the progression is fairly easy. Rhythm Changes progressions have some great reharms! Overall a good book for basic funk rhythms. G. Kohler
  • I've been working with Comping Styles for Bass Guitar Volume Two: Funk and the Rhythm Ear Training Video Course. I like both books. I felt I really needed to get my reading together and get my rhythms more accurate. Both these courses have really shown me my weak points which is exactly what I was looking for. P. Bartlett.

The Big Metronome

The Big Metronome

The Big Metronome...is a must own for any instrumentalist.

This book is part of a series of books which are designed to teach a student:

  • How to develop a better internal sense of time.
  • Feel music on a more macro level.
  • Develop an innate sense of musical form.
  • Develop a more natural feel that breathes with the music.

"Feel Time" not "Count Time."

All this is accomplished by requiring the student to "feel time" not "count time." The Big Metronome is filled with numerous exercises and comes with audio files to play along with each exercise.

Audio Files

Each audio track for The Big Metronome gives you a two bar count off and then a click every measure, two measures or four measures. As this pulse happens at wider and wider periods of time it requires the student to rely more and more on their own internal sense of time.

Additional Audio Files

Although The Big Metronome does contain 3 CDs worth of audio either the physical book or ebook could contain MP3s for all metronome markings with a click for either every measure, two measure and four measures. It is recommended that you also purchase the additional MP3 audio downloads that available. The most complete additional audio is the "Big Metronome Bundle 1" which contains over 45 hours of MP3s with every traditional metronome marking with every macro beat up to 8. This is a huge resource and highly recommended to get the most out of this book and time concept.

We have therefore created additional digital downloads of other audio files that will aid you in your development.

The Big Metronome comes with 3 CDs but these MP3s give you many more possible combinations to strengthen your time. Each MP3 package gives you 37 audio tracks that are 10 minutes in length using the following metronome markings:

40,42,44,46,48,50,52,54,56,58,60,63,66,69,72,76,80,84,88,92,100,

Rhythmic Studies for All Instruments Volume One

Rhythmic Studies for All Instruments Volume One

Rhythmic Studies for All Instruments Volume One new approaches to melody, harmony and rhythm.

As music evolves, so do the techniques, mechanics and aesthetics that musicians use change and develop to express their new approaches to melody, harmony and rhythm. Improvising musicians have been creating and performing music for thousands of years. As musicians who have studied jazz for a number of years can attest, this art form, by its very nature, will continue to evolve. And like all musicians, we draw much of our inspiration through studying the performances of all the great artists throughout the history of our music.

Study the influences of African, Afro-Cuban, Indian, South Pacific and Asian musics and how they have influenced the modern musician both in composition and improvisation

With the continued development of melody, form and harmony, so has rhythm grown to encompass the concepts of the many musicians who have introduced challenging new ideas based on meter and form. Since the introduction of African, Afro-Cuban, Indian, South Pacific and Asian music into American culture, musicians have been absorbing and transforming these influences to enrich their own inspiration. Rhythm is one of the key elements of this inspiration.

Apply new rhythmic ideas over standard forms

By applying some of these ideas over standard forms, such as the blues, we can gain an understanding of how these concepts can be applied to many different musical genres. But the idea for many of these exercises is to gain more control over the basic quarter note, its pulse and form.

Rhythmic Studies for All Instruments Volume One is best applied to group situations.

These exercises are also meant to be played with other musicians; they are not just solo studies. The best way to learn these concepts is to work in any musical setting you can organize, be it duo, trio or quartet. Often you may want to rehearse in a group setting with a metronome running to help guide the musicians. Once you and your bandmates develop these ideas, you should begin writing and performing your own compositions and formulating your own ideas.

Midifiles are audio files that play the exercises with total accuracy and you can control the tempo. This will allow you to:

  • Start at a tempo with which you feel comfortable
  • Slowly speed up the tempo over time.
  • Concentrate on accuracy
  • Make practicing more productive and fun.

Odd meter music can really open up new ideas and rhythmic feels. Understanding rhythmic patterns is crucial, being able to play them naturally will take experience. Odd Meters gives you 120 pages of exercises to do just that.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I feel my odd meter playing is weak when playing chords or trying to groove with other musicians?
  • When I have to read odd meter music are many of the mistakes I make related to rhythm?
  • Do I have a tendency to speed up or slow down when I play or read odd meter music?
  • Do I lack rhythmic diversity when I'm soloing or writing odd meter music?
  • If someone shows me an odd meter groove do I have a hard time duplicating the sound?
  • Is it hard for me to translate the odd meter rhythms I hear into rhythmic notation?
  • Do I have a hard time getting a musical flow happening when I'm called upon to improvise with odd meters?
  • Can I identify the odd meters I'm hearing when I'm listening to or playing music?

All of these problems can be symptoms or poor rhythmic skills. This can cause you not to perform well, get lost when playing music and not be connected to the music you are listening to or playing. Every time signature requires a different set of skills. Just because you can play in the common time signature of 4/4 doesn't mean you will easily play with an array of changing time signatures. Odd Meters is one of the best ways to help you improve this important area of your musicianship.

Don't forget Pitch and Rhythm are two of the most basic aspects of modern music:

Listeners will pick up on rhythmic inaccuracies very quickly. As you can see from the previous list of compositions odd meter music is more and more part of the norm. So don't get yourself into an embarrassing situation where you find out in a very public way that you can't play a particular odd meter song. Just a few minutes a day can solve this problem and give you the confidence that you can perform well.

If you have basic reading skills Odd Meters is the perfect book for you.

If you are just getting started with Rhythm get the Rhythm Primer first but if you know how to read rhythms and just want to hone your odd time signature playing then Odd Meters is perfect. It will give you:

  • Two sections: one with eighth notes as a basic pulse and another with sixteenths as a basic pulse.
  • Exercises using just one pitch so you can really concentrate on learning the rhythms
  • Downloadable free audio examples of each exercise in the form of midifiles. Midifiles allow you to control the tempo of the exercise making it the perfect type of file to use with these exercises.

Develop your rhythmic skills in a logical way.

Remember rhythmic accuracy is one of the keys to projecting confidence and having your listeners engrossed in your music.

Our bodies respond to rhythmic accuracy and feel uncomfortable when it's not there. Odd Meters and the whole Rhythm series develops this accuracy through targeted exercises. Contemporary Rhythms Volume One

Contemporary Rhythms Volume One

Develop your knowledge of Contemporary Rhythmic Notation

Contemporary Rhythms Volume One develops your knowledge of highly syncopated rhythms written with contemporary notation. A serious musician must not only be able to recognize, read and play rhythms fluidly but be aware of alternate notation used especially in contemporary classical music but found more and more in all styles of music. This volume concentrates on eighth note rhythms and the rhythmic patterns often associated with that rhythmic level. Each exercise uses one pitch which allows the student to focus completely on time and rhythm. Exercises use modern innovations common to twentieth century notation, thereby familiarizing the student with the most sophisticated systems likely to be encountered in the course of a musical career. Midifiles for all exercises can be downloaded from the internet to facilitate learning.

Unfamiliar Notation

Volume One of Contemporary Rhythms looks at the notation methods of contemporary music. Composers in the last 100 years have departed from the traditional method of notating rhythms. This in turn has created a situtation where you may find a rhythm you know but you don't recognize it because of the notation used. Obviously, it is important to learn to recognize these alternative notations to improve your sight reading ability.

Imaginary Bar Line

The imaginary bar line is commonly used to divide music in 4/4 into two equal groups. Many modern composers have done away with the idea of an imaginary bar line thus creating a situation where the notation can be highly deceptive.

Here is an example from the book
